The Infamous 777 Crud Ring...
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:36:28 PM »
Hi All,
The 777 crud ring... seems to be largely an artifact of inlines? Cap and Ball users don't seem to have this worry. (Why's that I wonder?)

What's the usual solution to cleaning for that? Is it a problem in the field where you don't have access to a bucket of hot water?

If "in the field" means out hunting, then no, I don't shoot enough for it to become a problem.   At the range, I take the (non ammonia) Windex with me and swab regularly when using 777.  Really not a problem there either.  I've recently switched to the Blackhorn, which solves many problems.

I wish ;D mine is all Black powder though. I might shoot every day of the week but will still do the hot soapy water thing every time followed by the hot rinse & evaporate. A patch after this with the common #9 solvent can still reveal staining though and if I put a brush on the rod with a few more patches, I can get a lot more crud out. This is the only way that I can beat that ring as it will sneak up on you if you let it.

Curious......just what does ammonia do to the bore whether using 777 or BH209?  I shoot Hornady copper clad .45 bullets, sabots however. Therefore no copper deposits in the bore. Seems as though my Hoppes benchrest has a hint of ammonia in it. Does remove copper well on standard rifles.

And yes....BH209 does solve many problems.

Ammonia is corrosive when heated IMO.  Ok to use if you rather shortly clean the bore.  I've had rust form within an hour using ammonia based cleaner.  I use the vinegar base now, with subs, hoppes with Blackhorn.

Not every user of T7 gets the "crud ring".  It seemed to be caused by hot 209 primers.  The Precision Rifle 25 ACP conversion breech plugs, PR Vari-Flame adapters, Win T7 209 primers and Rem Kleenbore 209 primers were suppose to solve the problem.

The inlines that I use loose T7 in, use #11 caps for ignition.  I have not experienced the "crud ring" in these rifles (Ruger 77/50 and Knight MK-85).

The Winchester 777 primer did not solve the 777 crud ring problem with my Encore.   The crud ring got worse with the Winchester 777 primer.  Went back to the Winchester 209 shotgun primer and stopped using 777.  That solved the problem.

Oddly enough, the Winchester 777 primers made the crud ring worse in my Encore. Plus I got a lot of blow by with them. I went back to the Kleenbore primers and have very little crud ring. This is with loose 777, no pellets.

Interesting. Was considering CCI "normal" strength primers myself. Always had good results with CCI primers in handguns and rifles. But that was 15+ years ago. Was reloading .44 mag, .45 ACP, .30-06 and .223. Never have reloaded shotshells, and until my box gets here, haven't tried an inline before.

So anyone have any experience with the CCI primers?
