Shot some hotter 45-70 loads today
« on: August 04, 2009, 01:56:49 PM »
I normally shoot 405gr. cast with 31gr. H4198 or 25gr 2400.  Today I shot some with 41gr. H4198 and they kicked the snot outa me.  By the book, they should have been running around 1750-1800fps but I don't have a chrono.  The bullets were about the cheapest I could find but they shot consistent.  They're 405gr, .459 from Missouri Bullet.  Glenn Fryxell (lasc.us) was right.  Size it right and it won't lead.  Barrel was shiny clean when I finished.

My eyes are old and don't work so well anymore.  The result is that I don't shoot so well.  But, you know, pulling that trigger and hearing it go bang is therapeutic, regardless of the accuracy.

Hot loads out of the 45-70 kick too much to enjoy shooting the gun.
I don't load anything hotter than trapdoor nowadays... It's fun and you don't need shoulder surgery afterwards. :D

Even those aren't hot, 400gr loads start at 46gr H4198 in Hodgdon levergun data, modern rifle go to 53gr, but as Spanky says, even top trapdoor loads are the limit for most shooters.  ;)

This is the heaviest/hottest load that I've shot through my Buffalo Classic so far. The bullets were cast from wheel weights in the LEE .459-500-3R double cavity mould. ( I hope the attachment works this time)

Get above 50 grains H4198 and things get fun!  Just got an old Weaver scope in the mail and mounted it on my 45-70, gonna see how it holds up.

For full power loads I like H322 in 45-70 and 450 Marlin.  With max loads you can get well over 2000FPS with most bullets. ;D

I like about 54gr of it in my 450 with 325gr cast bullets, for about 2000fps...accurate, the recoil is on par with my 500 S&W shooting 700gr cast though.

I know what you guys mean!! Those 50/400gr loads are reserved for my Browning Hi-wall and Marlins. Not that the Handi cannot shoot them, they are just too uncomfortable!!  I really like the way the lo 40/400Gr loads shoot in my Handis!!

Yesterday evening I went shooting with a buddy.  This is the first time I've fired the BC since I remounted the original woodwork.  Let me tell you I am hurt.  My shoulder and ribs hurt, and I'm not sure but I beleive I partially dislocated my right shoulder.  I'm black and blue on the right side and I'm typing real slow.  Those "Hot Loads" are all fine and good, but I would strongly recommend a recoil pad :'(.

Now you know why the Horse Soldiers of Yore didn't like those full throttle 70 gr of BP.

I'm surprised it didn't up-a$$ them right off of their hayburners ;D

I shot 75 rds of 45-70 loaded to ruger #1 levels with 405 gr Remington bulk bullets  out of my Buff Classic last sunday. I was a little sore but nothing to really complain about. Filling the stock with lead shot and sitting up straight at the bench not being humped over makes a world of difference.

I did that once just to see if I could find the limit of my 22" Handi , you will notice that I said ONCE , don't think I need to do that again , a full day with the 450 Marlin was bad enough but the Ruger level loads are just nuts .  ;D

Now days I stick to the Levergun loads and 22 cal CF stuff .  ;)

It really depends on what Ruger data you use, there's 10,000lbs difference between Lyman's data and Hodgdon/Hornady's, Lyman's 40kcup Ruger loads are the same as Hodgdon and Hornady's levergun level. Barnes' Ruger data goes to 55kpsi!!!  ;D
