Got a phone call today, a 357 handi is going to arrive Sat or Mon. It is a new Sb1, syn stocked, clean bbl W/base & spur for the out
the door price of 249(tax& callup). Feel like teenager(I'm 68) heading for a first date, hate to say how long waiting.
Now comes the decisions, it is a SB1 frame and I want a Max. Have a 44mag bbl on a SB2 frame thats never used fo any more
than plinking & lite citter use. If it locks up both way, problem solved. Next should I get rent a reamer and do it myself, have a fairly
good ability at mechanically things or find a smith and let him do it. Next thing is I have a good Mod 158 that is not to shabby a shooter
in 357(1986) should I get rid of it to help financethis and a beautiful (2cd one) 22h lam straight stocked rifle I could not resist. Tell me
guys does this ever end?  Fred

OMG!!! Get rid of a Handi?  ??? What are ya thinkin!!  :o I reamed one a couple weeks ago, piece of cake, just follow the instructions in the FAQs.  ;) There are fellas here that have Maxed SB1s that work fine, just be careful when working up loads, keep and eye on the primers, they'll likely be the first sign of a problem.

You won't see the deposit on a credit card purchase, I've rented several times from them, never a problem. He even bought a 460S&W reamer just so I could rent it after I pestered him long enough!!  ;D His recent disappearance was due to moving.

If I can ream a 357 mag to a max and not screw it up ;D, a 9 year old can do it. ;)  If anyone has any kind of "do it yourself" attitude, the ream is easy.  It took longer to set up and then clean up than to ream my 3 barrels.  I normally find it cheaper to pay someone to do mechanical/construction work for me than to try myself and then have to pay someone to fix my mess :'(. :-[  DP

I'm sure you can do this. Just go SLOW, keep the reamer clean and straight. Did I mention to keep it clean and go slow?  ;) Remember,  its not a drill. One turn, remove clean, blow it off repeat. Good cutting oil is your friend. EASY!! About 30 mins and you will have your Maxi!!!

Your gonna LOVE the maxi. There is a little sub handi cult here that has discovered the maxi and LOVE this little caliber!!!

4D is a good place to rent from. As Tim said, he kinda dropped off the map for a while. He was just moving. Many of his past customers got a email explaining the disappearance caused by the move and that he is currently up and running for all our reamer rental needs.

Good luck,

I had a .357 Handi reamed to Maxi by Lyle McGregor at Dick Williams Gun shop outside of Saginaw, MI.  He's a superb gunsmith and he charges 40.00 plus actual shipping.  Mine came back in a week.  It was a shooter when I sent it in, and it didn't change a thing.  I'm amazed at how well everything shoots out of it, .38, mag and max included.  Just excellent.  You can reach Lyle at 1-989-777-1240. I'm sending my second one down to be done so my grandson and I can use them together.

Hey, Thanks to all for the interest and encouragement. Will get the new girl on monday and have decided to do the conversion
myself. Even though I've heard from Quick & others about the SB1 being OK if watching for pressure signs I feel more comfortable
using a SB2 receiver & will probably use this new one for the 44 mag as I never push this one, only used for plinking and varmints.
I have used the maxie in a TC bbl that I recently purchased and have really fallen in love with it.  Fred

Fred,
I'm shooting a 357 on a shotgun frame, with 360 DW and slightly shortened maxi, without having reamed it.  I have had some primer perforations, but only on factory, never on my reloads.  Don't know why.  I'm not loading hot, but surely as hot as most factory.    In any event, no other problems to report, and exceptional accuracy with just about anything I feed it.

You can, but I doubt that most pistol shoot Max much.

ammobank.com has Maxi ammo.  I got 100 rounds to shoot and give me some brass to start reloading.

I had the same primer perforation issues with the .357/SB1 I just bought, only it happened with both .357's and .38's, both low pressure loads.  The gunsmith I use said the firing pin was both too long and too small.  He shortened the pin and that ended the problem. Fred, hopefully you don't run into this problem.  Other than that, I've been very happy with the rifle and it has become my favorite.

I've been reloading with rifle primers...no more problems.
