22 RF to 22 Hornet how to:

This is the simplified 22 rf to Hornet re-chamber.  First take the ejector out, then put a couple thicknesses of paper towl or paper under the ejector (this holds the ejector slightly to the rear so that a little dirt under it won't mess up the lockup), also put a little piece of cleaning patch under the ejector so it is pushed up hard when you push it to the closed position.  See pictures.  Do not buy a Hornet ejector, you will have to mill out the breach to fit it.  Cut the Hornet chamber with the 22rf ejector in place, you will see that the rim cut for the 22rf is slightly larger than the Hornet rim, they do this so that the fireing pin will not hit the barrel above the rim of the RF cartridge.  Run in the reamer, I use a sizing reamer run in short and then my finish reamer, take it out of the lathe, put a little scotch birght pad on an old brush and polish the chamber some, put it back to gether without the paper and patch parts and you are all set, takes less than and hour, only 40 minutes if I hadn't stopped for a Gin and Tonic.  Larry

  Personally, i'd want to use a bbl. that started out with the SAME diameter bullet that the hornet has.

The versapack barrel would end up with the fireing pin in the wrong place, and 22 Hornets were origionally made up using 22 rf barrels, so yes, a 22rf barrel is what a Hornet can properly be made from.  Larry

don't measure the ammo, measure the barrel.  Most .22lr groove diameter are around .223 with a 1-16' twist.  The original 22 Hornet was designed from rechambered .22lr barrels.  The original Hornet bullets were all .223 and no heavier than 40 or 45 grains (to accomodate the 16" twist).  Modern Hornets are usually .224 groove.  You can still buy .223 Hornet projectiles.

Larry rechambered a 22lr to Hornet for me.  I use .223 bullets.  It shoots AWESOME!!!

S&B 45gr bullets measure .222 for me, I have one Fronteer brass factory load with a V-Max bullet that measures .225 but that is probably because of the crimp they use on it.  A .22 long RF also measures .225 and I have some Long Rifle that measures .223.  Jacketed Winchester 22 Mag 40gr bullets also measure .225 also probably because of the crimp.  Fact is they all go down the barrel just fine, 2 or 3 thousanths just doesn't matter a bit, most people who know say maximum accuracy is had with projectiles .002 larger than bore diameter, probably of more concern would be the twist rate, but that is why all hornets are loaded with short little bullets with round noses.  Larry

Also my H&R 22 Mag barrel slugs out at .2235, so go figure.  In the past I have seen .22rf barrels for 10-22's designed to swage down a 22 bullet to 20 cal and get a little more velocity out of it.  Larry

  I guess you missed the part above where i said that i have measured bbls.??  Anyway, i use cerosafe to get my measurment instead of a slug.

  I've been around long enough to have owned guns chambered for the hornet cartridge that came with .223" bbls, but i didn't think anyone was useing such undersize bbls today.  I guess when your making a gun with such a low price, you have to save money someplace.

so what bad difference is .001" (or .0005") smaller supposed to make?....<><....:)

someone(?) once told me a .22LR single shot rifle (Sportster/Handi) could not be rechambered (the chamber reamed out) to a .22 WRM becuase the mag bullets were .001" larger...he was WRONG....<><....:)

I had a .22hornet that a young aspiring smith conjured up back in '92 or so... He 'poxied a 22 rimfire barrel into a 490 20ga. stub..traded him a jw15 .22 for it.. It shot ok but hadda shim da heck outa the mounts to get the scope to line up...Sold it for 130$, wish i still had the jw 15.. the barrel he reamed was off of an old cheap .22 autoloader..can't recall the brand.. :-\

That is basicly what Wayne did for me with my 22 mag to 218 Bee and the same done in 22 Rem Jet , all these rounds can or have been done with either .222 .223 or .224 dia bullets .

Once you slug the barrel , you will know which bullet to use , not as big of a deal as some would make it out to be .

I got the barrel back today in the mail... Thanks Larry.
As usual the work looks beautiful and the chamber looks like a mirror finish.
I have mounted a Simmons 3-9x50 on it and plan on putting some 45gr. Remington ammo through it today.
This is the same 22mag barrel that I shot quarters with at 100 yds.
If it shoots as well as a Hornet I will be a very happy camper. ;D
I will post pictures of the groups.

The newer CZ .22 Hornet rifles have a good reputation for accurate shooting, and their barrel dimensions (bore / groove) are usually closer to .22LR dimensions than standard 22 Hornet dimensions. Perhaps they are using their hammer forged .22LR barrels too? Apparently, Hornets like both tight chambers, and tight barrels. Old Winchester model 54's have a very good reputation for accuracy too.
