There has been a shooting in a LA fitness club here in the Pittsburgh area tonight. There are at least 6 people dead as of now. Including the shooter. We were watching on TV together as everything unfolded. My wife went on to say that guns are to easy to get and no one should be able to own a simi auto weapon. I blew up at her and come upstairs. As I type this I could spit nails. She is against one of the things I value most. As I was headed upstairs I told her if she keeps this crap up over this I will devorice her ass. We are so different on this subject that it really causes problems. Dale

Well of course I agree with you Dale about the gun control thing ......BUT(you knew this was coming)

Dont make too big a deal over it, Women react emotionally first(some men do also) but they see something like that and it upsets em so they verbalize that emotion. She may really be a gun control freak but you had to know that before now. Personally I would not respond to that kind of remark, just act like you did not hear it, that will really make her crazy!

Dale, try and remain calm. If it was anybody but your wife or son/daughter, go ahead and blow them off, or tell them off. Best thing to do is reason with your wife. You have to live with her. A good example is about 15 or 18 years ago, in a nightclub in New York City, a guy was trying to get even with his ex-girlfriend. Since he couldn't get a gun, he took 5 gallons of gas and started a fire at the nightclub he thought his girlfriend was at. Killed over 90 people. And, didn't get her, as she had already left the bar. Maybe if he had a gun instead, he wouldn't have killed anybody. Ya never know.
Try to explain that a gun is nothing more than a tool. Torpedoman is right. If you can, take her out shooting. Start with maybe a 22 rifle, and take your daughter along too. Good Luck! gypsyman

Shootings happen everywhere.  The US publicizes crimes more than many other countries.  Why not bring up the tribal machete murders in Africa.  Hundreds of thousands were hacked and killed in inter-tribal warfare and genocide.  NOBODY says that we should ban machetes (well except the UK but they now are considering mandating "stab-proof" kitchen knives).  A woman got drunk and killed 8 people while driving the wrong way on a divided highway.  I've yet to hear ANYONE call for cars to be banned.  Guns aren't the problem.  They are just a celebrated cause for those who wish to control our lives. 


If folks were truly concerned about saving large numbers of human lives they would concentrate on autos and doctors.  If it were about safety and protecting people we would raise the driving age significantly.  We would mandate breath-alyzer/ingnition interlocks on all cars.  No vehicle would be able to be driven for more than three hours without at least one hour of being turned off to ensure driver rest periods.  Speed limits would be 55 mph or less.  Driving at night would be banned as well.  There have been studies that show doctors contribute to the death of tens of thousands per year in the US through mal-practice or inaccurate diagnosis.  In America, guns cause many less deaths than automobiles or doctors.

  No need to belabor the point. If you can't get her out to shoot/hunt..get your daughter out to do the same. Get that little girl to love the outdoor sports, then you have an ally. If you can swing it financially, get her something as pictured below...that way you can hopefully, "divide and conquer" toward the hunting/shooting sports !

The Missus and I had the most biggest& loudest dust-up ever in our entire 30+ years over my in-laws. It is settled as much as those things can be. Boundaries had to be set and compromises worked out.

There are no winners in this sort of thing between spouses. Hurt feelings and depending in what went down, a sense of betrayal will linger/simmer for decades.
Kool it down with the fireams thing unless you need an excuse to bail.

Heck yeah!!!  Kids are the ticket!  When the missus and I got married she wasn't "into" guns but she wasn't agin'em either.  My step-daughter started to like that stuff and then my step-son... then my wife took them through the hunter safety course in Maryland when I was gone for some fun time away from the family doing "military" stuff.  Then she signed them up in 4H in a shooting club.  Then the step daughter wanted to hunt deer so I picked out a 20 ga Ultra Slug Hunter and a scope for it.  Mom went to buy it since I was gone again.  Then I made the comment that "everyone can share that slug gun".  Little girlie didn't like that and said she wanted her own.  Mom and I said that little girl had to pay for it all out of her savings, she did and mom made her second gun purchase in two weeks.  Both exactly alike and with the same scope.  Only difference is the wood and the slings.  To shorten things up... mom now buys guns for me when she goes home on vacation.  Little girlie is now seventeen and is a Beretta aficionado, did I spell that right?  This German beer hits hard when I'm tired and tired and tired.  Only had one, but...    Little girlie has the 20 ga slug gun, a Beretta 390, a Beretta 686 and a Beretta Stampede.  Little brat has better guns than me...  She is 17 now.  Some dude is gonna get lucky with this one some day.  I just hope he can gut a deer 'cause she refuses to.  So anyway, Mom fully approves of guns now.  She's going to the US for a couple of weeks at the end of August/September.   My safe will either have a Springfield XDM or an 1892 clone added to the contents while she is there.  I love it when she does that for me...  I have three there that I've never shot.  An 1895 Cowboy in 45-70, a Contender carbine barrel in 6.8 SPC and an unknown rifle that she won't tell me what it is but she knows that I want it and it's on my list...  can't wait to see what it is someday.  Maybe next summer...

Did I mention that I happen to like German beer.  This one is a Schwaben Brau Das Helle.  Not sure what that tranlates to in English Beer-ese but it's right tasty.  I have an order in for some Hacke-Pschorr Dunkel from Munich.  Can't wait for it to come in next week.  It's not normal here in this area so it's a special order.  I had it a couple of times in Garmisch and really like it.  I think it's something like 1000 calories a sip but it's good anyway.

Not sure what this one translates to either but let me taste it and I'll tell you about it...

Really nice head in the maas.  Darker than the Das Helle but not a dunkel.  Just a nice rich golden color.  Wow!  A complete different smell and taste than the Helle Bier.  I like it... smooth not bitter.  Not as good as the Hacke-Pschorr that's ordered but not too dang shabby either.  That label translates to something like " a beer from the good old times".

My wife wasnt crazy about guns in the house.. Thats changed over the last 20 years. This year she wasnt sure about the girls going out back to shoot with me. Till she heard how well they did. Couple weeks back I took their Marlin 60 & shortened it up for them. & painted the stock pink. You should see them shoot. 50 yards iron sights. They can hit a pop can 8 out of 10 times. I gotta get a scope for them

Education is the key. Most oppose that which they know nothing about. But, you cannot educate someone while yelling, they won't listen...or respect what you have to say. Staying calm and listening to what they have to say first is key. People's feelings are people's feelings. You cannot blame them for that, only re-educate them and teach them to understand.

My wife was against guns when we met. I only talked about guns when she brought it up. I listened, agreed where applicable and CALMLY disagreed where applicable. I then asked...would you like to know my reasoning why? If said yes, I told her. If she said no, I told her how one sided and unfair she was and that she would never understand and continue to believe falsely. We own 2 pit bulls that she loves dearly. I tell her, what if our neighbors believed what they read about pit bulls and hated our dogs for what they AREN'T. We have had several break ins in our neighborhood. Not our house...why is that? The dogs make people think otherwise.

If all else fails...get the DVD from Front Sight gun training. Dr. P has a great way of switching anti-gunners.

If he had used his wifed stelletteo heels off of her shoes to stab the people should we out law and collect all womens shoes with a heel of any kind? Or will they need an expensive license and have a background check to buy womens shoes.  Or should everyone will have to walk around in Crocs?  Maybe by being absurd in your questions she will see that she is being absurd and reactionary.

I have no plans to devorice her over this. I was upset last night when I wrote this and we are both over it already. It just gets in my crawl when she starts spewing her anti gun coments. She has no interest at all in learning to shoot. Now my daughter is another story. She does have an interest and she has been to the range a few times. She wants me to buy her, her own gun and paint it pink for her. There were about 75 or 80 people in that gym when that nut started shooting. I feel if more people carried guns that this would never have happened last night. He may have killed one person before several people started shooting back at him. Dale

     Although I am a tea-totaler, I can recall that German beer was powerful. When new replacements arrived into a section, often the guys would take him to their favorite Gasthaus and let him swig a few. He may have been used to putting down 3-4 American beers in that tine, but it seems that about 2-3 would have them flat on their backs.
  A guess at a translation:
   "Schwaben bier das helle"... "Swabian beer that is good". I'm really guessing at the first word but the beer is probably from Swabia..one of the "states' in Germany.   Ummm, then there is that town named "Schwabish Gmund"   ...It's been a long, long time though..
