Hands down, A Dakota 10...

I have and have had a number of really nice SS rifles. I Thought my dream SS was a 243 Aristocrat.... Then I got one. Beautiful gun. My Handis shoot better!!! Just no where near as purdy. ;)

TCR 83 is my favorite single shot rifle. I have had TCR barrels in most of the standard calibers and the 243 was the only one I couldn't get to shoot MOA.
The G2 carbine platform is awful hard to beat for every day duty on the farm. The Aristocrat is just too pretty to be banged around everyday.

Dakota Model 10 in .30-06

Yup, but I'd be hard pressed to choose between the 30-06 and 7x57.

Without hesitation I would, take the 7x57Mauser!

Ruger #1   45-70     Can be loaded down, or way up there. with more recoil than I can stand. Front sight is far to tall, put a NECG peep sight on & can dial right in. Good for any load. or any animal.

Well I have seen this post for quite a time but just didnt have any idea what my One favorite would be ?  I have been around guns for a good while and have in the past few years just about given up interest in abunch of other nice guns I own and have  just become fascinated with single shots. One reason is due to the many type of actions that have been tried and for a gun with a simple purpose can be just down right COOL !!
I am going to list some of the types of single shot actions that come to my mind and if you remember others , add to them.
Brake Actions,  many types  some with outside hammers,  some hammerless, some that fold , probabley the least expensive and overall most popular type.

The Swinging Barrel action,  This type the barrel swings to the side to open the breech to load and extract,  example is a Stevens Sure Shot, mostly rimfire rifles.

The Sliding Barrel action, This type the barrel slides forward to load and extract, example the Remington Beals rifle , mostly rifires but has been made in shotguns also.

The Trapdoor Action, this was a clever way to use convert muzzleloading rifles to use metallic cartridges, very simple a top hindged breech block and origanal side hammer , in my opinon a really good way to load and fire a rifle..

The Rolling Block action,  Again a really good way to load and fire a cartridge,  used from 22 rimfires to 10 ga. shotguns, very versatile.

The Drop block action,  Many different types such as the Peabody, Martini, and European designs,
also the Mossberg model L rimrire, and the Ithica model 49 SS rifle.

The Swinging Block action, there were very many of this design at one time the most popular were the Stevens rifles, Favorite, Little Scout No. 44.

The Falling Block action,  So many types the list goes on forever, hammer types, hammerless, right now the Ruger # 1 is about the best for what you will have to pay for one.

And dont forget all of the Bolt Action single shots , theres a bunch of them in everything from rimfire boys rifles to big long barreled shotguns.

Theres also the Floberts and other homemade concoctions but I cant think of any type of firearm where there was more ways to load and shoot a cartridge than were made as single shots.
Current handi family, 24 ga./ 58 cal ,50-70,  45 smokeless MZ, 44 belted bodeen, 44 mag,.375 H&R (wildcat),375 Win.,357 max, .340 MF ( wildcat ), 8 mm Lebel, 8x57, .303 British, 270 x 57 R,(wildcat) 256 Win Mag, 2 x 243 Win,2 x 223 Rem. 7-30 Waters &20ga.,

Spank,
Have you priced some of the other selections?  Most all are high dollar compared to what we are used to paying!!!

Take my Dakota choice.  It's in the thousands. Merkels too depending on flavor.

Little story, We bought (the store) six merkels about eight years ago. A good friend was in Germany and handled the funds. It took almost three months but we all walked away with very nice rifles for about a grand each. All doubles minor engraving. No big calibers, most guys getting 9.3x74R.

I did have...  :-[ I sold off most of my expensive/collectible firearms to pay down my mortgage. A number of very desirable Winchesters, Marlins, Ruger three screws and my Contender collection went up for sale. I bought most all at the rite price, so I did very well and paid down a large chunk. The good side is it really got me going on Handis!! With most all of my Contenders gone and still having the single shot itch... I looked to the 357 maxi I had bought a number of years before. I had had a couple other handis for a number of years, but didn't really get tinkering with them. I didn't sell off the Leupold Glass I had on many of those rifles, so I had good optics and began filling the safes with H&R's. I think it worked out all rite... ;)

Hi All,

Several years ago I had a .40-65 made up on a Navy Arms rolling block action with a Douglas Bbl.  The maker put a really nice piece(s) of walnut on it and I added a tang sight set from Uberti. I shot it occasionally just for fun but recently have started to get a little more serious . I have been using a Lyman 310 tool at the range to experiment with loads and have been getting some happy results. This rig will never be a MOA shooter but darn near it. Who shoots black powder at 100 yards anyway...if I am in a 6 inch circle at 300/400 yards I am a happy shooter, for what I have invested. Looking down the road at what the politicians want to do with guns, this one will be one of the last ones they try to grab. >:( >:(

5"x54?  We had 5"x38s on the USS Philip (DD 498) and 3"x50s.  I think the USS Carpenter had some sleeker looking gun mounts with longer 5" barrels although I don't remember what length they were.  Could have been 54X.

For those who are wondering what the second number means, it is multiplied times the bore to get the length of the barrel.  So a 5"x38 would be 5" x 38 or 190" long.

Handloading would run you broke.  The projectiles were around 68 pounds IIRC - it's been a l-o-n-g time ago (the Philip sank in a typhoon in 1968 as she was being towed to Taiwan for scrap).

Thanks for the memories!

bought it this weekend, my dream gun.     Ruger No 1 45-70 Gov SS Laminate Rifle 22".

don't know why, but I have always wanted this gun exactly as shown
My FFL holder requires any firearms to be shipped to them via another FFL holder.  So, If I make an offer on a firearm please let me know if this is capable of being done from the start.  Please do NOT mark an item "SPF" to me until we "both" are happy with and in agreement on shipping, funds and the transaction in general.   Thanks

My choice is my Ruger No 1. in 45/70.   Over a single shot solid bottom Mauser Action with a Hart Barrrel in 6 M/M Remington I also own.

I only replaced the trigger and worked up loads.

It will shoot the 300 grain Winchester hollow point into .604 inch at 100 yards for 3 shots and it shoots cast bullet loads into under 1 inch at 100 yards.

If I remember correctly I have less than $600 in this rifle including the after market trigger.

I really love the simplicity of the rolling block action.  If one were available in modern steel to handle a .308 cartridge I would be very happy!

I would like a 16ga single shot that mated with a falling block that had rifling the that 2inches like a Paradox gun. So with the right load you would be able to get geese, quail, ducks, deer, boar and everything in between. That would almost fit all my gun dreams. Anyone know a good gunsmith that could do all that?
