Beaver
« on: August 06, 2009, 04:33:53 PM »
Buddy of mine just gave me access to his grandmothers farm pond.
Has not been fished in 30 years! First time fishing it my brother caught an 11 pound
bass. Now for the catch to the deal. It has a large population of beaver.
kind of a neat critter and I didn't really like to do it, but I eliminated a couple
of the really big ones I saw. My friend wanted me to get rid of them because of
the damage they are causing, which was substantial. My question is, why do they sink
when they die? The first was a headshot with a .22 mag and he simply rolled over
feet up in the air and then sunk. Most things float when they are dead but down it went.
I wanted the Pelt. Next one I got was with a .22 sniper sub sonic 60 grain. virtually the same result.
I guess you have to get them on the bank.

I don`t know about Ga., but here in Oh. you better not get caught shooting a beaver with going through the channels with the game warden. They are not hard to trap and that would be the best way to get rid of them, in season of course.

I don`t know about Ga.,

Last time I checked they were an unprotected species here in Jawja!   ;D  Take 'em any time, any way you want.  Same as coyotes, english sparrows, pidgeons, yankees...  ;) :D

Can find no regulations against it ?
I see no evidence that they are endangered or anything.
I see them all the time.

Yes it depends on the state as to what's legal & all. I do believe they usually sink when shot. Trapping in season is more effective & a better way to get a good pelt.

Check your game laws booklet next time you get a chance.  Right up toward the front it lists all the unprotected wildlife species in Jawja... right down to fiddler crabs!  Or did you know that and are just giving that poor yankee boy with the southern name a hard time?   ;D

But I still wouldn't take 'em until the pelts were prime.  Squirell season opens in August but I don't shoot them 'till after the first frost because they're full of wolves...  :-\  I guess I mean just because you can do something doesn't mean you have to do something... that is if you have a reason not to do something you legally can, you shouldn't but if you got a reason you should, you can, so go ahead.   ???   :-[   :-X  <nevermind>

:D ss, beaver are commonly shot here in Wy. It is legal, and they can be taken on private land when doing damage. Some of the most popular calibers are of course, the .222, 223, and .22-250. Over the years, I have shot a few. They all floated when shot with the above calibers. I am not sure if it has something to do with killing quickly or not. For my part, the common .22 's killing power stops with forest squirrel and rabbits. I know much larger animals have been taken with them, BUT for every one take I would wager 20 are crippled to die later. :-[ No animal deserves that, not even an old skunk. >:(

The Location is not well suited to touching off a High powered rifle.
I do agree that a rimfire is minimal for them and I would not take
anything but a head shot. I also wanted the pelt undamaged but
that didn't happen either. I am thinking about some .38 SPl. SWC
rounds in my lever gun.

We have a season here and this isn't it unless on a depredation permit. When they start backing up creeks into farmground they usually just bring in a trackhoe and tear em out.
