Glutton for punishment... (.454)
« on: September 29, 2003, 06:21:56 AM »
Well, I've got some history handgun hunting with my Encore 30-06 w/ a 15" barrel and thought the recoild was fine.  Low and behold, I stumble on the nice looking Super Redhawk 7.5" in .454 Casull for $300 (!) and just had to have it.  What a great looking gun, and since I'm revolverless, it fills a hole.

Am I in for an awakening?  Shooting the 30-06 doesn't bother me at all, but the pressures and energy of the .454 on paper are staggering.   I'll use it for some whitetail work at ranges under 100 yards - and for some high-powered plinking.

Seem like a lot of fans of this caliber on the board - which by the way - IS GREAT.  Any advice for starting out with this one?  Favorite factory loads that won't scare me off?

Thanks,

Bill in Michigan

I don't find the recoil that bad. How ever if you plan on shooting 50 rounds of full power loads ina day you will be sore. Winchester makes a light 454 Casull load. Cor-Bon makes light load also. I am getting started reloading this caliber and from what I am reading reloads are the way to go. You can make what ever you want.
Enjoy your new gun!

For starting out with your new SRH, how about some factory 45 Colt ammo. Its cheaper, and much easier on the hands while you get accustom to the revolver?
You'll have plenty of time to play with the "rhino rollers" later.

Not yet.  Never really been exposed to it to be honest - even though I've shot all kinds of different ammo and guns.  I always feel if my habit is only a few boxes a year - its not worth it.

Is it?

I've got a Raging Bull that is a heck of a gun.Packs a wallop.The kick isn't as bad as you'd think.Does blow a really nice fireball though.

.454 Recoil

Maybe it is just me....

I have an SRH .454 7.5" barrel.  I had not shot .44 magnum for quite a while when I purchased the .454.  I thought the recoil was similar until someone else at the range came over to see what was kicking so hard.  Guess it is all in the mindset.  I love the gun and use it exclusively.  Now if I could just find ammo for a reasonable price.

There is no such thing as affordable 454 Casull loads, unless you reload them yourself. That is what I am starting to do.

of all the calibers a guy might choose, i consider the 454 to be the best motivation for starting to reload.   for the price two boxes of ammo a guy can buy about all that is needed; and a good amount of bullets and powder, too.   at this point you should be saving all your brass because it is one less thing you will need to buy later.  i load my high pressure 454 bullets one at a time, just like i do my rifle bullets.   i use lee reloading kit for now.   some scoff, others swear by lee.  i figure for the money it is the best option for the beginner.   and until i have a good reason to do otherwise, i will continue to use it.
full house 454 are what a person most often sees for sale, i have yet to see anything other than that in gun stores in my area (northern wisconsin).   when reloading you make what you want; YOU  dictate what bullet and how fast.   that is the greatest single advantage to me.  there are lots of other reasons; and good ones, too, but that sums it up for me.  i am currently concentrating on devolping reduced loads (approximate to 44 mag power) for the casull.   i have had excellent results so far with 300 gr xtp's and unique.  other bullets are loaded and waiting for a trip to the range to test results.

 I have a 454 Raging Bull ,I load my own shells but if price doesn't bother you give Winchester 260 Grain Partition Gold a try . They shoot great and man they pack a wollop !Magtech makes some cheaper stuff but if your planning on reloading don't bother bringing the brass home cuz magtech brass s--ks ! Good luck your gonna love this caliber it Rocks !!!
