An interesting point comes to mind. There are many places where you can't have a gun, and many people who don't want or can't have one. In such situations, a well made sword could be a good thing to decorate your wall with. Since swords have been made and used in most all cultures, you could find one to fit most any cultural theme you wanted to display, from a basket hilted broad sword, African piece, Japanese, or US military. The options are endless. If you can't afford an original, repros are available. I wouldn't count on a Bud K sword, but if you want to look around you can find something that is built for use and still looks like wall art.

The machette I mentioned in my first post is more of a utlitarian solution. I still stand by my position that a good tool is the thing to have, for working or whatever comes your way. There is, however, a 'decoration' anecdote connected with that too. Years ago (maybe '60s), my grand parents took a year long sebatical in Jamaica. After my grand father passed away, one of the 'peices of junk' laying around was a Collins machette with the manufacturer's yellowing sticker still stuck on the blade. My grand mother gave it to me, along with the story. He had bought this thing when they went to Jamaica. Had stopped and picked it up from a street vendor before they got to the hotel from the airport. She never understood what he bought it for. He just left it leaning up against the wall in their room the whole time they were there. She though it was an impulsive souvenir buy. My grand father was a practical man not prone to impulsive souveniring. He was a half breed raised on the Sioux reservation, then in San Francisco and Chicago. Life was hard and people didn't feel the need to be politicaly correct toward half breed Indians in the '20s and '30s. He knew that sometimes you have to fight if you want to live. She grew up differently, (wonderful woman, hopelessly niave) and though he bought a souvenir and just left it against the wall. I saw this two foot long blade and knew exactly why he got it and why it was leaning against the wall. Because he couldn't bring his pistol on the trip.

The Collins still has it's label and is hanging on the wall at my mother's house.

I've got to admit, I have a knack of getting people riled.
Let me try to clarify my post.

"I am wondering" etc. Speficially meant, Are you living in a violent high crime area where you could expect hordes of bad guys attacking you and you need multiple high capacity firearms?
If so I would have moved last week, period.

Shotall: Where in my original post did I imply that you should adopt anything resembling firarms laws and Rules of Self Defense that we have in Canada?? I certainly did not imply that we are better or more civilized.
Certainly I can keep a loaded firearm handy, but I am breaking Canadian law by doing so and again I am not advocating our system here over yours.

Self Defense in a measured reply of force depending on the seriousness of the situation would be my choice.

Would a baseball bat be enough, a large kitchen knife, the aforementioned sword. I doubt I would need a firearm with a 20 round magazine.......Hmm OK my 22 cal Rimfire holds 15.

Was that the Castle Law that got that Japanese exchange student killed in Colorado because he approached a house for help to find his way back to the school and the homeowner shot him on his driveway.??

As far as moving south of my border. Well, the winters aren't for whimps here for sure however there are other reasons why I won't and some of the reasons I moved up here from the US still exist. Come to think of it with your present Admin .......

kynardsy: It wouldn't be 9 or 12 here that decided your fate. It would be ONE judge and if he/she is anything like your latest member in the Supreme Court you can imagine what the outcome would be.

A can of wasp spray works much, much better than pepper spray. It has about a 20 foot reach where pepper spray has about a foot or so and will stop someone quick.

Absolutely! And wasp spray is available in states that don't allow pepper spray/mace.

So to me i start off with a sure fire light backed up with something with more power(gun/ or whatever).

It's just with all these thing happening (people going carzy, I keep hearing about this "war" that comeing, the flu going to make people keep each other) i wanted to gets some points on how good a large blade could be in a new orleans katrina state/ lawness. I don't own any guns at this time(the apt. i live don't allow guns) but i had some hunting guns before we moved and i have a saveing for new guns if i think i wanted some more.

I do own lots of non-gun weapons(swords,machette , big knifes, Switchblades,Qiang,spears,chikuto,tanto,dotanuki,
chakram, throwing stars ect) so i wanted to see just how good these could be if i needed them. My skills are only Hack and Slash.

As I pointed out I would trasnition to a second gun. I own almost 100 of the things. But let's say some gremlin filled all with sand or I was in the garage where I could not get to them and neeed something.
I think a sword would work. A huge knife, machete, axe, or shovel would be what I would grab. Heck I think I would grab my Lacrosse stick BB gun or what ever else I had near by if I felt like I was in danger. the more I think about it the more I like the idea of the lacrosse stick. it is 6 feet long, has an aluminium shaft and comes with a 1 pound hard rubber ball that can go over 100 miles and hour when thrown. the stick would give me distance and have a projectile to launch first.

swords are long knives. Knives are short range weapons at best. A good camp knife can chop wood, skin an elk, or get you arrested for carrying a weapon in the mall or on an airplane. A good sword is better at getting you arrested and lousy at firewood and elk. It still brings you within an opponents reach unless you have a Braveheart claymore (which really appeared to my unlettered eyes a German land knight weapon) If you would go to the internet and look up Firestone Belt Axe or Gransfors Burk carving Axe you will find two really overpriced but worthwhile items. Held at the top and under the blade they skin an elk quite nicely, my belt axe turns once in 22' but hits like a sledgehammer even when the rotation is a little off, they chop wood well, easy to fit new handle, sharpen and hold edge like best knife. They can still get you arrested but look innocent most of the time. I have had a local out of work machinest make me up a dozen heads to my balance and have been carving handles to find what I like best. (18ounce heads, plum browned) When I get the balance down they are going to be Christmas gifts to a few friends that laughed until i showed them how to throw one. Oh yeah they can be used as a hammer too. Look up the original rangers, Green mountain boys carried them back in the French and indian war.

Well, of course. I prefer a small ax (That G-Bruks is awesome) or soviet-style entrenching tool/shovel. Much more low-key and versatile.

These are brute force weapons but all you really have to do is learn to swing them hard and where the sweet spot is. Most of the more sophisticated swords (saber, rapier, Samurai, claymore, Schivona, Scimatar) require a much longer learning curve. I still prefer to throw a belt axe from about 30' and if I have to close, having a second light axe in reserve. Actually I intend to take the advice of the guy who taught me knife fighting. He said, "the other guy is probably better than you are, if you can, run!" Besides I have a half dozen madrone ax hafts roughed out and ready tto finish.

If we are talking about a survival, shtf situation, a sword would be a handy thing to have for two simple reasons.
1. a sword doesn't run out of ammo.
2. you wouldn't have the report of a gun to announce your presence.
I'm thinking I would like a hand,and a half with a blade of about 30". Oh ya, and a buckler too.
