If we are talking about a survival, shtf situation, a sword would be a handy thing to have for two simple reasons.
1. a sword doesn't run out of ammo.
2. you wouldn't have the report of a gun to announce your presence.
I'm thinking I would like a hand, and a half with a blade of about 30". Oh ya, and a buckler too.

Give me that little short Japanese blade, about 20".... easier to jump in quick and straight!  Much faster than the hand and a half.
better for surprises :o

I don't own any guns at this time(the apt. i live don't allow guns) ....

That's a perfect case in point for decorating the apartment with a high quality wall art/ defensive sword.  That said, if I lived in a place that didn't allow guns I'd have one anyway.  A small safe in a good idea for your vital documents.  I'd have a pistol stuck in there too.  Not super fast access, but quicker than driving across town to wherever you have them stored.  They would never know, unless something happened and then the apt. rules would be the least of your worries.

It occurs to me that you may have one, and just don't want to post that on the internet.  That would be good thinking on your part too.

Since ;my children were born I have come to love blades for self defense.   No ricochets or pass throughs,  I keep at hand a 1917 Navy cutlass, a Zulu Iklwa on a 4 ft shaft and a 15" Kukhri.   Any of these will deliver a DRT when employed./   Hopefully I will never have to.

I'm sure it's been said before, but...NEVER bring a knife to a gunfight...

That's how i got my Samuri sward.  A Japanease officer brought a sword to a gun fight, and a friend of my dad's was the one with a gun!

Dad traded for the sword, and then it came to me...

I can't say that is a fact 100 percent of the time. The story I mentioned before shows that it is the fight that is in the dog not the dog that is in the fight. Sword boy 1 gun boy 0 in that story.

But one providence tried to leave ? or was it some of the others wanted then to leave ?

That would be our spoiled Princess Quebec.

They do have that Provincial Party with Federal standing( what an absolute idiotic system IMO) that keeps calling for Seperation. Their idea of Seperation is notable different from what the rest of this country understands it to mean. There is no question in my mind that the rest of Canada fares better when the PM is not from Quebec.

All in all it is a political ploy to get a bigger slice of the pie( which they get allready) then the rest of the country.

IMO.  I wish they would have left years ago and we had a bridge over that place. ;) Or that you guys had a good  and direct highway running from New Brunswick to NY

oh, i have a "gun" i traded a black powder 6 shooter(had a hard time with it) for a single shot 50cal handgun. The thing  look like a Kentucky (1750-1850) pistol  and unlike the 6 shooter i don't have to know just how much to put in there. i been useding 3/4 teaspoon which is about 60Grains.

it's good out to 30 yards and the stopping power is carzy!!!

I have carried and used a 45 cal kentucky pistol during BP season and have delivered the coupe de grace to three different hogs with it.   I load with 60 gr of FFF and it packs a whallop.    No more squirming when a hog takes one of these behind the ear.

I imagine it would THUMP a perp in the chest pretty good as well.   Just have to be close.

60 gr. fffg in a .45 Kentucky PISTOL!! thats almost a hand grenade! I wouldn't go more than 45 grains. 60 grains in a rifle, thats ok.

It is quite a handful but the curved grip lets it roll up in the hand much like a SAA would.   Also I wouldn't dare try any extended range shooting with that load.

Could a sword be useful ?? Sure it could depending on the situation AND your ability with the chosen weapon. I would say for most people something the size of what we call a corn or tobacco knife would be a good choice. Light and short enough to be swung easily and brought back into quick play yet hefty enough to do the damage needed. Swords of any length and weight take training to be effective with and are not easily swung inside a house or hallway. Kind of brings to mind the roman short sword which was really more effective as a stabbing weapon. I will say that the sword has fear factor built into it. Maybe just me but it seems people fear being cut or hacked much more than being shot. In a real survival situation you would probably be better served by a smaller pole axe of some type that could be used as a walking staff , axe , hammer or weapon.

That would be the Marshall plan. I'm not sure how much "Love thy Neighbor" had to do with it, could Moscow's ambition for all of Europe have had something to do with it.
It didn't take the USA all that long to ask Germany to re-arm ;).

Heck George Patton wanted to re arm the germans the day after the war and push the Russians back to their pre war lines.

As far as a Black powder single shot.  OK I had one for a while and did a bunch of stupid things with it.  Trying to shoot shot, multiple buck shot as well as round ball and when I was out of caps I would put a little powder in the nipple and then take the heads off the strike anywhere matches  stick the white part into the nipple to act as a cap and use them to light the powder when the hammer fell.
I do not think I went as high as 60 grain equalivant of Pyrodex.  I think I sayed in the under 40 grains and did OK with that.

Not sure how we got to a single shot black powder pistol from a Sword.
But a comprmise could be a boarding pistol.
they used to sell them when I was a kid in the 80's and earlier, they were in all the gun catlogs as well as adds in the back of th gun mags.  As I remember there was a duck foot pistol and a swivel barrel derrenger as well.
The boarding pistol was a single shot pistol, 45-50 with a large knife built in that stuck out under the barrel.
the Duck foot was three barrels that all fired at once and the barrels were at a 15 degree angle to each other.
and the swivel derrenger was just that.  It looked like your typical Remington 41 over/ under derrenger but you needed to swivel the barrel up to the hammer to fire the lower tube.
At the time I think you could get all three for less than $100.  But to put it in perspective I remember gas being about .65 a gallon.
So they may be about $75 each now if they still offer them.

Shootall,
Do you mean ammo for the blade is nothing or do you mean that ammo for the Ruger pistol is nothing as there is no ammo out there in shootable quantities?

my heavy machette can cut a pineapple like paper, it cost 8$ new. you can buy new a Machete sword for 20$. Ever i mostly good swords can be got for 100$ or less.

last time a saw a ruger is was used for 320$, and you need ammo and mags for it.

For 150$ i got a single shot 50cal handgun + all that needed to use it and my daisho ( the long and short swords pair).

My pair of swords both can cut bamboo like it nothing, so i think a person would go down.

also think about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machete

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, owner of the sugar refinery La Demajagua near Manzanillo, freed his slaves on 10 October 1868. Armed with machetes, he proceeded to lead them in revolt against the Spanish government.[6] The first cavalry charge using machetes as the primary weapon was carried out on 4 November 1868 by Máximo Gómez, a sergeant born in the Dominican Republic, who later became the General in Chief of the Cuban army.[7] Possibly due to this historical background, machetes inspired a form of martial discipline in Cuba known as "machete fencing", focused as its name puts it, in the best movements and techniques to use machetes as weapons, especially against similarly armed enemies or even firearms.
