I made the plunge, and it is all your faults!
« on: August 07, 2009, 11:44:28 AM »
Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster here.  I have a NEF Pardner 20 gauge shotgun that my dad bought me when I was 13, which I absolutely love, but I had gotten out of shooting for a couple of decades.  Recently, I have started building my gun collection back up, and have gotten back into target shooting, and plan on doing some hunting again for squirrel, rabbit, and deer.  I found this forum while doing searches on NEF, and I have to say that I love reading all of the posts and getting a lot of great information.

Well, last night, I made the plunge again...  I bought an H&R Sportster .17HMR at my local gun store.  I have read a lot of good things about this cartridge, and since I am mainly going to be using it for target shooting (and the occasional groundhog), I was looking for a bull barrel set up.  Also, my days of wanting to burn up boxes of ammo firing wildly downrange are behind me, and I just really enjoy working on my accuracy, so I thought a single shot or bolt action was the way to go.  The H&R just seemed perfect, so it is mine now.  Haven't had a chance to get it out and shoot yet, but I will hopefully be posting some targets on here soon.

I do have two questions, which maybe someone can help me with.

1.  The Accessory Barrel Program flier that came with my gun says that the Sportsters that are marked "NEF" may be fitted with additional barrels.  Mine is marked "H&R".  Does that mean it may not be fitted with additional barrels.  The Serial Number starts with HY, which I took to mean that it is a relatively recent (early 2008) build.  I was kind of hoping to be able to get a .22 WMR barrel for it, too.

2.  I got my .17HMR for $153, NIB...  is that a reasonable price compared to what you all have seen recently?

Thanks again for all of the great info!

H&R's website:
"Sportster™ Rifle
Sportster™ frames can only be fitted with the Sportster™ barrels listed below. H&R 1871, LLC will only fit these barrels to Sportster™ frames manufactured by H&R 1871, LLC, with the New England Firearms® brand name. (These barrels will not fit Pardner® shotgun or Handi-Rifle™ frames due to the location of the firing pin.)"

22WMR, 22lr & 17HMR

It's about time you got your priorities in order :D
How could you go for decades without a new Handi??
I think you'll be happy with the .17... You don't hear too much bad about them. ;)

If it is an H&R made in 2008 you can have other barrels fitted as long as they are rimfire. I have a lot of fun with my sportster, i also have plans for a .22 magnum. Go up and read the FAQs and learn how to do a trigger job and other tips and you'll have that 17 shooting fine.

Welcome to the psyco world of handies stick around will really warp ya mind. ;D

OK, back from my first outing with the new Sportster.  Nice day, very hot (91 degrees), very little wind.  I was using Federal 17 grain V-Shock cartridges, and a Simmons 3-9x40mm scope.  I set up my targets at 50 yards, and got my scope close to zero, but not quite where I want it.  The first twenty rounds I shot, I cleaned the barrel after each shot (man, those Federal rounds are dirty!), as is my standard barrel break-in routine.  I also paused for several seconds between shots to allow the barrel to cool, but with the sun beating down today, it never really got cool at all.

I have to say that, even right out of the box, this gun is a lot more accurate than I am.  I put a bipod on the forearm, but I did not have a sandbag for the buttstock to help support the rifle.  No matter how hard I tried, it seemed that every third shot, I had a flier.  The first two rounds in each group were tight (in two cases, very tight, as you will see), but the third shot always seemed to take off on me.

Here are my last four groups:

Not too hard to pick out the flinch on this one

This one was a bit better, but still a big jump

The next to last group, two shots in the same hole!

My last group, again, two shots in the same hole, and getting really close to where I want it.

The last five rounds I shot were at .410 shotshells I had placed on the 50 yard post...  five shells, five shots, and it was amazing watching those shells take off!  Like I said before, I certainly cannot complain with this level of performance on my first outing, with less than 50 rounds through the rifle.  From what I understand, the gun should tighten up a bit after it has been broken in, but this one seems nigh perfect as is.  The problems on these groups was all me, and I could tell as soon as I shot which ones would be off.  I am really glad I found this site, and got the H&R.

Most .17HMR's should shoot 1" or less at 100yrds.

You came to the right place GTV. GBO's has many incredible forums for gaining knowledge, but the NEF/H&R forums here are renowned and second to no other place on the Web. Congrats on the great decision of getting back into the world of firearms.

Most .17HMR's should shoot 1" or less at 100yrds.

Yes, I have a Simmons 3-9x40mm scope on it.  And all of these groups, except the first one, are actually under 1", indeed closer to .5" (the first group, including the flier, is right at 1.5", the last group is just under 3/8", as measured from outside to outside).  The grid on the target is measured in 1" squares, so the targets themselves are only 4" in diameter.

I took it out again today for a bit, and adjusted the scope a little more, but I really need to get a bag or something to use as a rest while I am shooting, which I am sure will make all the difference.

OK, update on my Sportster .17HMR...   Replaced the Simmons 3x-9X40mm scope with a 4x-16x40mm Centerpoint mil-dot scope.  Had a chance to go to the range this morning, and set up on the 100yd range.  Once I got the scope centered (I really like the scope...  especially for the money), I got some really good groups with my Winchester, Remington, and Hornady cartridges.  However, the best group of the day had to be this one, using CCI TNT hollowpoints:

This is an amazing little rifle...  I cannot tell you how impressed I am so far with the performance of this gun.  It is accurate enough to make even a mediocre shooter (like myself) look good.  Now I just need to work on my end of the equation!
