Local shop has a sporterized Mauser in 257 Roberts...
« on: August 07, 2009, 02:35:28 PM »
I looked at it (didn't have a bore light, so the jury is still out), and it appears to be a '98 - I can't tell for sure though, but it had a synthetic stock and was d/t for a scope with mount/rings on it. The metal/bluing was in good shape and the action smooth - crown looked good too. They wanted $399 for it - too high or just right? I was going to go back with a light and check out the bore, but before I do, are they asking to much?  ???

Thanks
Bill

If the bore looks good and you do like and have a need for it make him a fairly sensible offer if in the ball park their is always some room to move but dont expect them to give in to a vary low ball offer if too low they may not even make a counter offer.   Jim

If it cocks on opening then it's a 98, if it cocks on closing it's a 93;95 or a 96.  If ya get it for 350, I'd say ya done good.  DP

Generally yes, but some sporters done on the 96 or other small ring actions have cock on opening conversions done.

There's generally exceptions to every rule, but another thing to check for is a rear safety lug on the bolt - this should be on 98's but not the other small rings.

To OP:

As to the price - eh.  With a synthetic stock you're certainly not getting one of those nice "time period classic sporters" or anything.  Just a good working/hunting gun.  Despite .257 Roberts being in my top 3 or 4 favorite calibers, based on your description I probably wouldn't pay more than $300, with $275 sounding a bit closer to right.  What I've found though is that a LOT of pawn shops and such will be willing to knock around 25% or so off of the asking price, which would take you down around that $300 price point.  YMMV.

As with all things though, the market sets the price, so if you think the rifle is worth it then by all means snap it up.

Now to complicate things they also have one of the Kimber 6.5 Swedes... they want $599 for it.

That I'd definately pass on.  You can get a new CZ or Tikka for about that, and you'll have FAR more leeway with handloading 6.5x55 with the newer actions rather than the old 96 Swede Mauser action.

I just paid $500 for one with a $200 scope on it.  I like the gun but I sure wouldn't pay $600 for just the gun.
