It's the law here where I am but even if it weren't I would let the officer know that I am a permit holder. For one thing it tells him/her that I have gone threw some stringent background checks and am most likely not a criminal and that I am not trying to hide something from him/her. Second if he or a partner happens to see my gun they are less likely to panic and do something we would both regret.
It usually takes a minute or two for the officer to get up to your vehicle when you get pulled over. I use that time to shut off the vehicle (this tells him/her I am not likely to try to run) get out my drivers license and carry permit, and roll the window down partially, (He/she knows I am not likely to shoot threw the glass) then I put my hands on the steering wheel and wait for him/her to approach. When they get to the window I greet them with Hello officer, is there a problem?". (Maybe I just have a taillight out.) They usually ask for my license then ask "Do you know why I stopped you?" Always answer with "No sir, I do not." I never admit guilt, that I know I was speeding or ran a yield sign or whatever. I never argue or make excuses. I find that phrases like. "Sorry sir, I wasn't aware I was going that fast" or "Sorry sir, I missed that sign." leaves them room to let you off with a warning to pay closer attention.
I have been pulled over numerous times in the 32 years I have been driving and have only received 3 tickets to date so I guess my strategy has worked well so far.
