Since I will be shooting a 45/8ths Blackhawk 45 Colt I'll post here.

Since shooting quarters is expensive let me ask this.
I have several 3 inch metal discs. At what distance would I have to shoot them for it to be the same degree of difficulty as shooting quarters at 10 yards?
I figure allowing .050 bullet overlap on each side of a quarter to qualify as a hit. So allowing the same on a 3 inch disc what distance?

Why not use some of the little "tin caps" used to hold down tar paper on roofs or on sheathing before siding is applied? They are not much bigger than quarters, but a lot cheaper.

I don't normally shoot things like that. I have a couple buddies that seem impressed with it for some reason and since I have some metal discs of 3 inches and orange stickers that size I just wondered.
Just something to do as it doesn't necessarily means anything.

Without measuring I'll say I think a quarter is about an inch in diameter so about 30 yards should make it similar in degree of difficulty to quarters at ten yards.

This should have been a no-brainer.........

What are you guys doing with your bottle caps...

A nice cold case of Sam's Summer Ale gets you 16 ready to shoot targets. (the caps, not the bottles)

Or ask your buddy the bartender to collect the caps during his shift. (Let him shoot some too)

At last resort buy a couple of bags of cheap generic caps off of one of the brewers websites.

cut a quarter size hole in a piece of cardboard, place it over a piece of paper and hit it with some spray paint. You can make a zillion in a few minutes, any color you want.

if you know an electrician, have him save the punch outs on his electrical boxes, they are about the size of a quarter and are usually laying all over the ground on construction sites.

Of late I've been plinking old golf balls off a tee with my SA 22lr.
Makes for some fun shooting and I usually get several rounds of 22lr through them before the come unwrapped.
Just something different. My grandson thinks it's hilarious.

Just keep an eye open at garage sales and you'll have enough for all the shooting you like.

There was an episode of a show with Bob Mundon, where he played golf with a 45 Lc by shooting just below the ball to drive it to the green, never saw him make a put with it though.

Attend a local silhouette match and knock over 5 field pistol chickens in a row at 25 yards and I will be impressed!! Better than shootin' at quarters.

We did that so well we got to shooting at the tiny NRA SB rifle chickens at 25 meters with our handguns. We had one made up as a swinger and shot six shot matches at it with our revolvers and it generally took six of six to win and I'm not sure a match was ever won with less than five of six. That was iron sight revolvers at 25 measured meters.

We shot the pigs at 37 meters, turkeys at 43 meters and rams at 50 meters also with iron sight .22 LR revolvers and semiautos if folks wanted. No one ever ran a straight thru the entire match to the best of my knowledge.

Quarter size target at 10 yards should be easy money with a long barreled gun with good adjustable sights and a good trigger...

I have so much fun shooting golf balls that I bought a big box old range balls off ebay . I got like 250 fro 99 cants plus shipping (like $8) . I have hit golf balls with every thing i have from 22 to 45 . I have seen them go 100+ yards with a 38 wad cutter . its a blast

I love using knock outs for targets. I'm an electrician and have stockpiles thousands of them over 10 + years

2 X 2 blocks of wood (actually about 1.5's) cut to about cubes at 10 yds. Shoot the remnants where they land, you get multiple uses of the target, random ranges and ever smaller targets!

BTW -- When was the last time you compared the price of a factory centerfire round with that of a quarter?

I bought some red stickers at the local dollar store. They are 3/4 inch. I think they make different sizes. This is all they had at the time. I have also made stamps that i used with an ink pad. You can make any size center hole that you need.

Good post, have enjoyed it, lots of idea's. With kids "idea's" for different things to shoot at is great. By the way meplat, don't know you, but you sir are one heck of a shot offhand. Would love some lessons from a guy like you or some more abilities on my part. SN

This was my thoughts also but I did like the question. On the surface, Graybeard's reply#3 would certainly seem to be in the ballpark. (1" @ 10yds should=3" @ 30yds) but to me, a 3" seems to be larger than a quarter even @ 50yds.

If I really wanted to find the answer I would arm myself with some construction paper & sissors and cut a strip to match the edges of that 10yd quarter with my arms being extended and a rest avalible for my wrist's.
The strip would then be used with the 3", backing that disk off until the edges matched.

This answer came to mind to me yesterday when I had my arm straight out with the thumb sticking up and using the top of the nail to gauge the distance of a doe (based on chest width) that had a good 800yds of open ground behind her. This is known as the poor mans range finder but it is consistent to a particular object at a yardage that one knew to begin with.

I get 31 yards, 20.8 inches. I'd find it much easier to hit quarters @ 10 yards.
