free float the 7400

Hi All
New to the forum and need to clear up some of the posts I read that they use a rubber o-ring to free float the 7400 barrel. How big and where do you place it. I took the forearm off one of my guns and the under side of the forearm on the inside is flat up against the gas port. Is this where you put the o-ring ? Thanks for the info in advance wd9bob

I used a metal washer on mine.

Without this washer when you tightened the forend screw there was a gap between the gas block and forend allowing the rear of the forend to be pushed hard against the front of the receiver butting an upward stress on the bbl. The washer took up the space betwixt the forend and gas block and in the process kept the rear of the forend slightly off the receiver

But my rifle is a synthetic stocked weathermaster

I used a rubber washer from a sink washer kit. I trimmed it a bit and what I like about the rubber is that when you tighten it up the forend stays put, without it being super tightened. It is important to make sure the forend does not touch the barrel on either side also. I shot this rifle yesterday at the range and once again it shot 3 3shot groups at very close to an inch. The load being 57.0 grs. of AA4350 under a 165 gr. Remington PSPCL. Function is perfect.
