.22 Shot shells

Is it just my fading memory or were there some of these years ago with crimped ends "not like the plastic capsule like cci" that seemed to be alot more effective? I remember using them to shoot rats in our barn when I was a kid and it seemed that they were more powerful than the ones cci makes. Are there any others out there?

I remember those from when I was a kid. Havn't seen them in a lot of years. I'm sure cost had some thing to do with their dissapearance. The power loads you buy for nail guns look pretty similar. If the old ones were still arould I'm sure sombody would put one in his nail gun by misstake.   KN

Yeah I remember those, we even called them "Rat Shot" specifically.  Remember how they used to sound just like a bullet tipped .22 LR round? The new ones just *puff*.  If I am not mistaken, they made the crimped ended ones in .22 short, also, didn't they?

When my father passed away my mom gave me almost all of the ammo and guns my father had(she kept the .410 single shot Stevens for pest control around the place).  In the ammo box were two boxes of .22 lr shot shells by Winchester-Western with the crimped ends.  I took one apart one and the shot inside looks to be about the size of number 12 shot.  One box is still full(50 shells) and the other has 23 shells in it.  Remington-Peters used to make them too as somewhere in my junk drowers I got a few of them too.  I won't use these as they are just keep sakes now.  I prefer CCI shot shells.  Lawdog

I bought some of these 22 shotshells (brass case with crimped ends, 22LR length) at a FleetFarm in Wisconsin during the last year. I belive they were made by Federal. I can check the box when I get home. I remember they were not cheap, $4 box of 50. I also got some of the new style with the plastic ends. Both work when shooting pests around the house where a rifle is not appropriate, but I can't say whether the old style is more powerful than the newer ones with the plastic tips.

OK, I"m looking at a box. Federal Classic .22 Long Rifle Bird Shot, No 10 Shot , #716 on lower right corner of the box end. This is what you are looking for. It's the same stuff that I remember from 35 years ago. This was new ammo in stock at a local discount store.

Winchester makes the crimped shells also.  They're loaded with no 12 shot, and I buy a box every year (~$5.00/50) for hunting carpenter bees with my Single Six.  :wink:

Fellow carpenter bee slayers!

I now know i am not crazy!!

Here in Georgia we have European Hornets also,
they look just like a Yellow Jacket but they are about
2 1/2 inches long or more.
The .22 rat-shot does a handy job on them also!

(A tennis racket works real good too!)

I also have a box of Winchesters here that are marked "X22LRS" and have No. 12 shot in them. Don't remember the cost though they were purchased in the last year or so.

As a side question, will the crimped ones feed and fuction in a semi-auto pistol?

I have a friend that uses them in his Ruger MKII.  I tried them in a smooth bore .22 rifle for rattlesnakes but had lots of trouble getting penetration with that small #12 shot.  My friend shoots them as long as they move, sometimes a whole magazine worth.  Me, I don't have time to wait around.  I want them dead on the first shot.  For rattlesnakes, DEADER IS BETTER.  Lawdog

They don't cycle my Ruger MK II pistol or any of my 10/22's. It even says on the box that they most likely won't cycle a semi auto. They do cycle in the bolt actions though. :grin:
