Henry rifle durability

Hi all, new to the forum and would like to hear comments on the durability/reliability of Henry rifles in general.  My wife wants a big boy in .357, which is a fine looking rifle.  A grizzled old Korea vet told us Henry rifles are fine wall rifles, but lack the durability of an everyday shooter.  I would like to get her a rifle that our son (5 years old) can pass down to his grandkids.  Thank you.

Well I have had my .44 Big Boy for about 5 years and haven't got a complaint about it. It has maybe 1,000 to 1,200 rounds throught it without a problem. I do hunt deer with it in zero degree weather and it has never failed me. I have to say the weight of it is sometimes hard to handle but I had a sling and lace on butt cover made so I can carry it over my shoulder or while I'm dragging out a deer. It's a great gun and anyone who says they arn't never owned one. I have to admit this isn't my primary deer gun but I use  it to fill my doe tag after my buck is down. Buy it for her, you won't be sorry.

I've had my Henry Big Boy in .357 Mag. for about 3 weeks, so I don't have a long track record to talk about, but I've not heard anything from anyone on any forum about Henry rifles having problems.

I want to try some lead bullets with a gas check next, but this rifle's shooting 125gr. and 158gr. JHP bullets very well. Here's a group at 25 yards. Along the bottom of this hole is a 3 shot group from the 10 o'clock position to the 4 o'clock position using 9.0gr. of Unique. The 3 shot group alond the top of this same hole is a 9.5gr. load of Unique.


I'm having a lot of fun with this rifle and plan to continue to do so. 8)

For some reason the .357 Mag. caliber is difficult to find/order. I waited over 2 months for mine to arrive. Other calibers like .44 Mag. and 45 Long Colt are easier to find.

I've had my Henry (a 22 rimfire) for about 8 years now, and it's still wonderful.  It served as a truck gun for the first half of that time, and was not pampered in any way.  In fact, many 'gun people' would likely say I abused it.  Still slick as greased snot and shoots well.  Couldn't give you a round count, though.  Plus, Henry as a company is absolutely top-notch IME.  I'll buy more of their product as and when I am in the market.

That's good to read.
I bought one about a month ago and like it a bunch.
Action very smooth.
Functions great.
Likes all ammo it's fed.
It keeps getting more accurate the more I shoot it.
And on top of all that it came in very affordable.

Had a 22 henry std, used it everyday 2000-2004, hunted ground-squirrels at lunch every day...easily 1000 rnd thru it...no jams, didn't need a lot of cleaning, always accurate, durable finish...what's not durable about that? Try and find a used one in a local gun shop, difficult if not impossible, that ought to tell you a lot. Go Henry...

Hi, I have a Hoo1 since 2007 and target shooted a lot with no problem at all. I just got my new Golden Boy and it is as smooth as the H001. For the wall mounting, I can tell you that I have a Marlin 30-30 and when you try a Henry action, you immediately hang up the Marlin on the Wall... Your wife will love the Henry, if not, I will take it( not your wife, the Henry). Hope you try it as soon as possible, if not you are loosing good time...

I've been hunting & plinking a henry H001 Standard .22Lr I bought used almost 4 years & 5,000 rounds ago, w/o ANY issues.

Well, one issue - I installed a peep sight because my eyes had trouble sorting out the front/rear barrel sights.

It actually sees more use than my Marlin 39a and waaaay more than my Winchester 9422XTR magnum.

357 great is a great rifle.  Shoots well. No problems.  American made. Wal-mart can order too. I can't remember $, but it beat others by 100's of dollars.  This was a few years ago.

Well I cant comment on how long they will last as I just got a Big Boy 357mag this week. Ive been out shooting it every day. I almost bought a Marlin untill I learned of Henrys warrenty. Like others with old eyes i need a peep sight and ordered a skinner. So i havent bothered to really sight it in yet. I do know this. My wife thought it was beautfull!! Which it is. From shooting it I can state that being heavy it holds on target much better my other rifles that weigh 2 lbs less. The recoil while shooting 130gr 38 spec is almost non existant. Anyone who could hold it up could shoot it. 357 mag 158gr are still mild recoiling and dont have that sharp KICK that light weight rifles have. You can feel it but its more of a PUSH. This is important to me as I can not shoot anything with much of a kick. I sold a nice Ruger Mini 30 7.62x39mm that was just to hard on my old back. (old motorcycle injuries). Now you hunters know that a 7.62 just aint that powerfull, but it was still too much for me. So my Henry will get used a lot.

My kids don't stop shooting until there is no more ammo left.  My standard 22 LR has seen 550 round boxes get run thru it in an afternoon.  I have had it either 4 or 5 yrs, never one problem with it, or the plastic sights.
