.300 WSM Elk Load (?)

I have some 30 cal. 180 grain Woodleigh pointed soft points and some Barnes XLC bullets.  Which would you prefer to use on elk at around 2950 FPS MV, probably 100 yards max.

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

Try staying at a Holiday Inn. 

Couldn't resist.  Never shot an elk with a 300 WSM but I did miss once.  I have taken several whitetails with this caliber.  Knocks um dead.

Either of the of those bullets will work just fine under the circumstances you described.

My son shot a smaller 5 x 5 last year with a 168gr Barnes TSX tipped.  They were loaded to 3,100 fps.  He hit the elk high in the lungs at a little over 200 yds with his first shot.  It circled around a small stand of timber and ended up facing him.  He said you could see blood spraying out of the first hit.  He shot it again in the middle of the chest as it faced him and it went straight down.

How deep do you have to seat the Barnes VS the other? When the neck is short I like to see as little case space used up by a bullet as possible.

I do believe 2.86" OAL is right for a 165gr bullet.  2.8 works for me in my Rem 700 magazine.

the Barnes reloading manual recommends .050" off the lands, a little more than most others.   I can't seat that long with the Barnes 168's in my 308, too long for the magazine.  I have to go about .030" less than the mag to get them to feed.  

You can measure the mag length pretty easily.  Then seat a bullet part way in a neck sized, unprimed empty case, chamber it and close the bolt.  That should put the bullet against the lands.  Then take a micrometer and seat it another .050" deeper and see whether that overall length is at least about .030" less than the length of your mag.  If so you're set.  If not, have to seat it a little deeper til it works in the mag.

That Barnes bullet is one of the few that doesn't shoot well in my 308.  I wonder if it's because I have to seat it so far off the lands.  ??

I presume that the Barnes is longer then the other, if they shoot equally well I would go for the shorter one.

Grandson got his first elk with a .270 & 140 gr. failsafes.  It just clobbered her.    ER....I got one too.  I get the blind pig award.
