Have you not grown your own cabbage?  I have grown the following with good results:
corn, cabbage, turnips, raddishes, bell pepper, banana peppers, cucumbers, egg plant, tomatoes, bush snap beans, English peas, collards, okra, strawberries, pink eyed purple hull peas, butter beans, carrots, beets, yellow summer squash, butternut squash, watermellon, and rutabegas.  I have not had good luck with lettuce.  It is either too hot or it frosts in cooler weather.  I have not tried potatoes or sweet potatoes.  I thought potatoes were fairly cheap and have just never tried them.  The root crops as well as the greens were grown in winter.

I have canned or frozen most of the above and had it last a year at least.  Cabbage can be blanched and frozen or made into sourkraut.  I pickled the beats.  Made pepper sause with the banana peppers (to used in the turnips and collard greens).  All of what I raised tasted better than anything bought either frozen or canned at the grocery store.

Dale, most hot sausage is not that hot. You can make the mix as hot as you like it from the number of hot banana peppers you use. I have never tried it with jalapeno peppers. You cut your cabbage, sweet pepper and hot pepper and partially cook them first because they generally take longer to cook. use a good bit of cabbage because it cooks down. I generally cook this in the same pan I fried the sausage in. If the sausage makes a lot of grease you can poor some of it off. Cook it in a large skillet with a cover on it.  Then throw in the cut up zucchini, onion, sausage, and cook untill done. You will know when everything is cooked enough. Throw in the cut up tomato last because it takes little time to cook. Let me know how it turns out.

Try your lettuce as early in the spring as possible. Lettuce does not like heat. Here in Western Pa. Lettuce does well when we plant it in the spring with the onions. You mentioned butter beans, are they the flat beans? we plant both flat beans and green and yellow string beans. I rate string beans near tomatos as the best tasting vegtables from a garden compared to what you buy anywhere else. Our string beans are done now, but when they were producing I ate them every night. Don't waste your time with potatoes they are cheap enough to buy and they are a good bit of work to plant in a garden. We used to plant them, but quit.

I just got back from the store. I am boiling the cabbage just a little to give it a head start. No pun intended. ;D I picked up some sweet Italian sausage and some tomatoes. My tomatoes are not ripe yet. I am going to finish this rum and Coke and go finish the meal. ;D I picked some yellow waxed beans while I was down at the garden and am going to throw a few of those in as well. ::) I have never planted any cabbage. This is what I plant every year Bell peppers, mild Bannana peppers, Hugarian hot wax peppers, Jalapeno peppers, Beef Steak tomatoes, Cherry tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, Cucumbers, Pole beans, Yellow wax bush beans, Carrots, Radish's, and Pumpkins. Dale, just finished dinner. Try this. Fired up the grill for burgers and dogs. Wife and I took a quick walk out back to the garden and got some veggies. Lots of Hungarian hot peppers coming in. So I cut a couple in half lenght ways, cut out the seeds and veins. Put one in the bottom of a hot dog bun, laid the dog in with a little mustard. I think that had to be the best hot dog I ever ate.
Getting ready to cut some collard greens up, never grew them before. Guess I'll boil them a little before putting them in with ham hocks and beans in the crock pot. That'll be dinner for Tuesday or Wednesday. gypsyman

I was about to say that we have a perfect need for some greens with bacon, onion, and a little cayenne pepper.  Throw in jalapeno grilled dove breasts, and maybe some roasted corn on the cob, and its a meal guaranteed to induce a coma in front of the Golf Channel.
