Octagonal barrel question
«
on:
August 10, 2009, 04:33:05 AM »
Did TC ever make... say... a 22LR, .223 or 30-30 in 21" or 23" octagonal barrels for their Contender rifle? And if so, will they fit on a G2 frame?
If not, rather than special ordering one, I may put a WTB in the buy/sell section.
Thanks...

Factory octagons were 10", with some limited run 6" to 12" octagon barrels made for TCA members.
Some of the custom shops have played around with profiles, but a custom tapered octagon carbine/rifle barrel would be very pricey.

I am kinda liking the idea of a tapered octagon barrel for a carbine. Let us know if you find someone to make them.

Since the fire T/C has only offered a fraction of octagonal barrels---------There are some used ones floating around BUT get picked up quickly. There are a few custom guys out there making them.

Well, it looks like MGM will do one in octagonal w/o taper for $495. At least, I think it's w/o taper. That's with everything else standard for a 30-30 cal. I suppose other calibers would be about the same unless you wanted something a bit off the wall. A few of the other barrel makers I checked on offered custom contours but I couldn't find much info w/o contacting them in some way.
As much as I would like to have octagonal barrels in a few calibers, I just can't see the cost involved. I guess I'll have to stay with standard offerings.

Why they were never mass produced by TC and why most custom shops don't offer them - few customers will pay the considerable extra cost for them.

I like octagon barrels. Here is an Encore wearing a MGM 26" 6MM TC/U octagon barrel.
Or go to the wild side. Twelve sided, dodecagon, MGM 14" 357Max.
Another MGM dodecagon 14" 223IMP.
I plan some day having a 24 or 26" dodecagon barrel made in MGM 30-30IMP for a Tender rifle. I think that would look cool!!!
