Dyeing traps

I was wondering if anyone knows how to make a natural dye for steel traps because I have spent so much money buying artificial dyes.

There are many natural substances that can be used.Walnut hulls,sumac,bark etc. Just takes time and can be a bit messy.  Tom

Price of a bag of dye- enough to do 100s of traps- is about $3.  You would spend more in gas gathering natural things to use than that.

Lure, dye, wax, etc for a season on an average line is paid for by the first couple of animals. Really a very small % of capital outlay.

I agree with Trapman on the cost efficiency. Scheel's outdoor sporting goods here in Lincoln had natural logwood dye for slightly less than $3.00 per bag. I can't gather enough walnut hulls or hardwood bark to do that same thing at the same price range if I figure in my gas, gathering "hours", additional boiling time, etc. The bag of natural dye is a very good deal.

Well there is some stores around the area that i live but i cant find one that sells trap dye so i order them from a shop in Ohio and i pay $7.95 for a bottle that dyes 4 dozen traps and I pay $5.95 for shipping and handling which is why it becomes expensive over time. But i guess i should find somewhere around here that sells them cheaper.

If you have the time and ingrediants are close it is cheaper to use Sumac berries or the differant barks fm trees like oak, maple  and hemlock.  Just bringing the  ingrediants to a boil and then taking out and  putting traps in would make it less messy.  Ive done  up to 500 traps this way and do some every nite or day and  the job gets done.  If you have any specific questions email me or post on here.

Also  after you put traps in  brew after taking out dye material bring to a boil for approx 15 min and then let set overnight or when ever you get to them.  Take them out and if canine steel flush or rinse with water to take excess dye off and then dry and wax  .  If water traps  you dont have to flush just wax.  BUT keep yr water wax and  canine wax seperate.
