Am I a bullet caster now?
« on: August 11, 2009, 09:42:58 AM »
Has GBO done it again!?  Have my horizons once again been broadened by the insidious influence of this board!?   ???

It all started slowly as most of these things do.  I had some casting supplies and equipment; I've been casting RB's for my BP rifles for some time.  But Lloyd's admonition about not casting unless you shot a lot of cast bullets made sense to me!  A few RB's are one thing, but when you get into that lubin and sizin stuff you start talking money!

And I never shot that many cast bullets anyway!  At least until now... you can thank GBO for that little endevor also!   ::)  But I can still buy all the cast bullets I need.  Right?   :(

Well, that little fact hasn't stopped me from scrounging up WW's whenever the oportunity arose!  Now tell me, what do I need WW's for?   :-\  You can't shoot RB's made from them in ML's...  But everybody was talking about how hard they were to find & you better get them while you can & and look how much they cost compared to the good old days... I naturally had to start accumulating some.   :(

Then there was the discussion about "Hot Glue" bullets.  I never heard of such a thing but what an idea!   :o  Since I'm wanting to put a range in my basement for 22's and primer powered practice bullets, if I had moulds I could make all the practice projectiles I want!   :o  Thanks Stimpy!  Yah, thanks a lot...  >:(

Well guess what happens next!  One of our members decides to sell off his daddy's lifelong accumulation of casting supplies!   ::)  Next thing I know I own a forty-four and a forty-five mould.   :(  Okay fine.  Glue and Wax bullets here I come!

But no real casting for me!  Oh NO Sir!  Not me.  Nope!  Not with the prices of sizers and seaters and punches and heaters and all that stuff!   ::)  But one of my new moulds did have 2 bullets in it and I sure wanted to try a .454 bullet in my '73.  Some member said they shot great in his.  I just need to find a way to lube them.  Well let me tell you, that hand lubing is a pain and I ain't gonna do it again!   :-[  But there are other ways!  And they were discussed here... complete with U tube vidios that members so graciously pointed out to me!

Strangely enough, and speaking of bullet lube, about this time there was a thread going on about making your own!  :o  Now that looked pretty neat!   :)  So the great beeswax hunt began!  I covered Dixie like the dew looking for that stuff and finally found a supply a couple of miles from my house.   :-[  The next thing you know I have a couple of pounds of bullet lube moulded into little cakes all stacked up.   ;D  Oh, BTW, if you do this, don't use the vasoline you get from the Infant's Supplies section of the store.  That 2 pounds of lube smells like a freshly powdered baby's butt!

Now about this time another member starts beating his keys together about increasing the diameter of his Lee sizing die...

So I look around.  My casting table is all set up.  Nice neat little cubes of lube and freshly smelted ingots of WW's, that I have no earthly use for, are stacked there, waiting to be put to use...  :-\

Well, as soon as the Lee sizing dies arrived...  ::) I fired up the production pot!  Shiney lead bullets fell like rain from the RCBS mould!  The lot was viciously culled by visual inspection and balance beam weight but when I finished the survivors were a beautiful bunch to behold!  Their little grooves were then filled with my own baby-blue lube, don't ask :-[ , and their firm bodies were squeezed through the Lee die, coming out a perfect .452!

I almost cried with joy!  I spent hours looking at these marvels I had created!  Each one was perfect!  I felt god-like in my accomplishment!   8)

They sit now, nestled in bright, shiney brass, waiting for me to take them to the range and unleash their currently stored potential!  The anticipation is driving me crazy!  I envision them flying down range into a tiny, one hole group.  How could a creation of mine do less.   8)

Complete WASTE of TIME and effort. Give them a once over and so long as the base looks good use them. I did a test once upon a long time ago cuz my best friend Bill Doss (now deceased) hated to throw one away after we cast them. I set up three groups one absolutely perfect in looks and weight, one that looked good but weight was off more than I cared for and one of the most ugly mess of bullets you ever saw. I loaded them all up and guess which group actually shot the best groups. Yup those ugly rascals that were not filled out had wrinkles and inclusions and all sorts of stuff. Never again did a bullet we cast get remelted Billy shot all that I didn't want no matter what they looked like.

I know it doesn't really matter Bill, but I wanted my first to be pretty!  Not some ugly, wrinkled thing!   Hummmm,  :-\  seems to me I remember saying that once before... a long time ago!   :P

Geeeese Randy!  Don't say that to loud!  D Crockett may hear you and you'll have to beg him to let you pay shipping on all the bullets he'll send you to "try out!"  Or 45/70 or Mechanic or a number of other members here!   ;D  I never seen as generous a bunch a fellers in my life!  Heck, if everybody was like the members here I'd be outa work!

Have you burned yourself yet? My first few attempts would result in some hot fingers (no major tinsel showers!). One time I was so excited about casting an exceptionally fine boolit I picked it up! I only had to do that once!

where's the report??

I only got to fire 4 so far.  And they were out of my M73.  I'm pretty encouraged, two were touching and the other two were also touching but about 2 inches away.  A good beginning considering peep sights and my old eyes at 50 yards.  The rest I have loaded will ride out deer season in my 3.5 inch SAA or my new gun belt.   ;D

I actually used up the rest of my WW's casting more of these during our monsoons a few weeks ago.   :-\  As soon as huinting is over I need to find more lead and see what load my SAA's really like.  Whatever it ends up being I'm sure the M73 will also like it! ;D

RE burning oneself.  I had a severe flare on a gas grill that badly burned me in the Springtime, affecting most of my right hand and forearm, and a good portion of my right leg.  These were the real, honest to goodness burns that sent me straight to the ER.

Well, the good news is that I healed with minimal scarring, and a good, healthy respect for those things hot.

Safety first, gentlemen.  ;)

Beware the demon water.  If he gets to the lead pot you'll be visited by the Tinsel Fairy.  Good job Atlaw!  Be careful because it is addicting...

Like holy black, once you start, you're hooked and like GB said, I used to toss the uglies til one day I decided to try them and they shot the same tiney holes their purfect brothers did and they varied as much as 5 gr from the purfects, so now I'm only picky with rifle rounds.

A few years ago,I started to use a deep biscuit pan, similar to a cookie sheet, with
the Lee melter inside. This way, should it leak while taking a break, the lead won't melt the indoor/outdoor
carpet,causing a fire.
The electric cord is well out of the way.
Just got a free, floor fan.Works.It keeps the smoke from stinking up the house.(fumes too)
Oh, and, no shorts.Flip-flops,Birkenstocks are also a no-no.
Shorts are OK reloading. Just not a good mix when around molten lead.

Atlaw, wished we could get some of your monsoon season here.
The old calibers and guns got the job done
