USH 20Ga Youth/Compact a few ???
« on: August 12, 2009, 08:32:30 AM »
Please excuse me if all of this info is the FAQ, but I really did'nt see much info specifically for the USH 20Ga Youth model.

I just picked one (USH 20ga youth) up the other day and I am hoping to set it up this weekend.

I was hoping to get some feedback as far as scope/ring suggestions.

Also, I was also hoping to get a good idea of some ammo types that the gun may like....I was a little shocked to see the price of the slugs and in an effort to keep cost down, I am hoping to find a slug that will work well the first time.  I do understand that each gun may be different, I'm just trying to figure out what seems to work well for others.

One more thing, is it possible to have a .44 cal rifle barrel fitted on this model?

Thanks in advance.

 ??? ???widowman;

I have used both the Simmons 4x32 shotgun scope and the Nikon 2-7 pro-staff  both fit well with Medium rings on the USH with about 1/8" clearance for the hammer spur, as for slugs mine prefers Remington copper solids or Lightfield hybred exp's.
The barrel replacement cannot help you on that one GL.

H&R will fit the 357mag and 44mag barrels to the SB1 USH frame.

That is good to hear. Does the barrel end up being a bull barrel as well?

Has anyone here had a .44mag barrel fit to their USH20ga, and if so were you pleased with the performance (read accuracy) of the barrel?

The 20ga USH uses the same SB1 frame as any other SB1 shotgun and current production 357mag and 44mags as well as the combos, all H&R rifle and shotgun barrels, except the 10ga based barrels, are 1.1" at the barrel swell. The big bore H&R rifle barrels are all heavy, but not considered bull barrels, they just have a big bore, so the barrel is a little bigger in diameter at the muzzle than their standard rifle barrels.  ;D

ya know, I have no idea.  The gun is marked manufactured in MA and the serial number starts with HY.

The store had it in stock.  I was assuming I would have to order one, but one of two H&R guns happened to be the ush 20ga youth I was looking for.

I guess I wasn't concerned so much with the new rifling as most of the positive info I had read was about the standard rifling.

Is the new rifling significantly better?  How would I find out which one I have?

Look down the barrel ( unloaded ) the Ultragon will have 6 lands and grooves The standerd will have much more, like 10 or 12.

Not to hijack, but don't these things kick like a mother? Being light and shooting slugs? I know it's marketing, but youth model? I've only had experience with a couple H&R shotguns and still have my first gun, 12 guage full choke. Both kicked harder than any pump or even bolt gun.
Thanks,

As mentioned the gun has a heavy barrel and there is additional weight in the stock.  Id say the youth model is in the 7lb range and even moreso once a scope and accessories are added.

I hope I'm not putting the horse in front of the cart, as I have not shot the gun yet.  But, I imagine that the recoil will me manageable.

As far as the youth configuration, the only time I hunt with firearms are when the temps are colder and heavy layers effect the length of pull.  That being said, shouldering the weapon with a t-shirt on is plenty comfortable as well.

Well I was able to shoot the gun yesterday, along with my brother and a few friends.  We were all impressed with the package, which ended up with a Leupold Rifleman 3x9x40 scope.

After testing several different brands of ammo, the Lightfields appeared to shoot the best and all shooters were able to shoot within an 1" of the target center at a distance of 75 yards.

There was one concern, on about the 5th round of the Lightfield's there was a failure to eject. It was not possible to remove the shell by hand, but a nearby arrow made the extraction easy.  Upon, further inspection of the spent shell, there was a black burn mark on and around the primer and what appear to be a hole in the primer.

I am not sure now if this is an extraction problem that should be attributed to the firearm or the ammo.

Has anyone had a similar experience or has anyone encountered either of the individual problems?

If it is an issue with the firearm, what steps can I take to cure the problem?

Polish the chamber and do the ejector improvement noted in the FAQs and Help sticky.  ;)

Thanks so much for sending me in the right direction.  My search was "failure to extract" which left me coming up blank.

After the weekend of shooting, I will give it a good cleaning, with special attention to the chamber.

As the only shell that did not eject had some damage (burnt primer)  I am thinking it may has just been an odd ammo issue.  However, if it happens again I will do the polish in full.

Once again thanks to all of the help that has been offered.  This site was instrumental in my decision toward the H&R USH 20GA, and I am very happy with the purchase and performance (one failed ejection excluded.)

You can check firing pin projection to see if that's a factor, with the barrel removed, cock the hammer, then while holding the hammer, pull the trigger and hold it all the way back while easing the hammer forward, this will keep the transfer bar up and will expose the firing pin, then with the tail of a caliper, measure the length of the pin projection from the standing breech, is should be ~.040-.050", less and failures to fire can happen, more and you may get perforated primers, the tip of the firing pin should be smooth and round too.  ;)

LOL.  I wish I had all of the equipment that is recommend, but in fact, my tools are very limited.

Thanks for all of the advice though and I will eventually take all this advice with me to the gunsmith at the shop I bought it from and have him give it a good once over.

Normally I like to do the work myself, but, I often find I am short an important tool or two.
