Anyone Tried The New Hornady 50 Cal 250 gr Sabots???
« on: September 30, 2003, 02:06:45 AM »
I saw that Hornady has a new 50 cal sabot with a 250 gr bullet with what appears to be a polymer tip.  Should be ballistically superior to the older style hollow point sabots that have worked so well in the past for me.

The old Hornady 240gr XTP/JHP sabot shoots good in my old TC Renegade but always looking to improve.  If anyone has any experience with the new Hornady sabots, I would be interested in hearing your opinion.

Thanks, Dave1

The top row is two views of a bullet that I recovered from under the skin on the neck of a moose. Sandi used her Omega 50 cal to shoot the bull at 70 yards with a 250 grain SST over 150 grains of Pyro. The bullet penetrated 18 inches of meat and bone and retains 140 grains of weight. The moose was deceased so fast that we had to stop filming and run up to find him in the tall grass! The first piece of the bullet I recovered was the little red ballistic tip.

The bottom two pieces of bullet cladding are also from a 250 SST and Omega. The bullet passed through a 250 lb black bear at 50 yards and the cladding hung up on the hide on the far side. The lead exited. The bear was up a aspen tree when shot and the yellow leaves were spectacularly painted red from the huge wounds.

Are there any published ballistics on the SST sabot with various black powder loads?  I shoot an old side hammer TC Renegade rifle and would like to try the new sabot.

I have two boxes of the new 250 SST but havn't tried them yet.
They are far superior ballistically to the XTP, don't know the exact numbers.
Aim small don't miss.
