Ruger SS hammer conversion
« on: August 12, 2009, 07:16:32 PM »
I would like to convert my Ruger SS standard hammer to a bisley style hammer.
Do I need the trigger as well?
Gun Parts list the triggers as different part numbers.
Figure this is a cheaper way than buying a Ruger Bisley SS.

Thanks,
Wayne

The frames of the two pistols are the same with the hammer/trigger./grip frame differing.  As long as the hammer is all you're changing you're probably OK but if you plan on having a Bisley the grip frame also must change as its the heart of the Bisley's feel. This would also mean changing the trigger.. I have a Bisley in 32 H&R and an old model standard in 22LR. The 22 is likely the most accurate 22 pistol I own including the M17 S&W and a Colt Officers Model Match among others. Only the High Standard Supermatic Citation comes close and it's a lot more finiky about cleaning and ammo. The Bisley really is a fine feeling piece but this is an early one and accuracy is a little lacking..

Still since I've not done this conversion and know Ruger does make changes Don't take this as a final word on the subject..

Thanks gunnut. I've got a 45LC in a Bisley, love it. Would love a 22 but they are not cheap and not many out there.
To do a complete conversion, which is most likely where this will end up, it will run under 250.00 complete from Gun Parts.
To do a cheaper test run I wanted to try the Bisley hammer then collect the rest of the parts later.
This should end up as one of the few convertible 22lr/22mag Bisley's out there.
Thanks again.

another way is to find a bisley vaquero, put the grip frame, hammer, and trigger from the vaquero on your gun and put the stuff you took off your gun on the vaquero....your gun is now a bisley and you have a vaquero left to sell....i did a blackhawk like that and pretty much broke even.

Interesting idea. I'll have to investigate that option. Thanks.

Howdy,
Is your SS an old model? The new model Single-Six and Bearcats have what looks like a Super Blackhawk hammer, that is a low flat spur. You could just send it in and have the new model guts installed for free.

I've wanted to do the same thing tbm. I believe Bbob has a good suggestion.
I e-mailed Brownells asking about the fit and their reply was that some slight frame modifications would be required. Don't know why you couldn't modify the  new hammer instead, but that was the reply. The Super Blackhawk hammer, if you like the style, is supposed to be a drop in fit. The info was on a forum and I thought it was on GBO somewhere. CRS, ya know. ;D If I can find it I'll post it here 4 ya.

OK..Go to Ruger Handguns, here on GBO,find the Bisley hammer thread and you'll get the info. That's not the thread I was talking about, but it's close.

You can often find bisley parts on gunbroker for reasonable prices. Here is a new model Blackhawk 30 carbine that I wanted to convert to a Bisley. I found what I needed on gunbroker and it went right together without a problem.

You can use a Bisley hammer on a non Bisley grip frame, but you have to remove material on the back of the Bisley hammer.
