Just got back from a seven day trip, so i feel just a tad shagged... so just posting the pics today and get to typing up the story tomorrow.

Hi all, im all rested now (there is no substitute for your own bed) so the story for the pics.

Well holidays started on Thursday with the start of the trip going to Emerald to see my other half folks, then to Springsure to help them setup for the Springsure Shotgun club shoot and outdoor expo. If you ever go to Springsure go up virgin rock (Minerva Hills National Park) anyway ill cut those four days of camping out of the story. On the way home we took a four hour detour to a property to get some hunting in. The landowners where on holidays so my mate was looking after they place. We arrived in the afternoon and only had a little time to sight the iron sight in. Next day got up and got ready to do some deer hunting for some meet, my mate had to do the rounds so i was dropped off near the creek, after a walk i came to the creek (pic1 is what i snapped at that point)

before i went down in to the the creek i unsung and loaded my rifle and started to walk it. On the sides of the bank where getting steep and at one point the creek cut off any way to walk along it on my side so i decided to climb up and walk along to top. The fog was still bad at this point only giving you about eighty meters visibility so i decided to find a way down into the channel, finding a washout i could make my way down. When i was half way down two does broke out in front of me on my side of the river running down it. They heard me before i saw them and after cursing myself under my breath i saw the same two on the other side of the bank heading up to another washout on the other side. So i anchored my feet on the sides of the wash out, let my arse fall to the ground and took the safety the rifle and took a shot at the last dow while making its way up the bank CRACK!... got dirt but no deer. So after that excitement and thinking to myself “after that shot nothing will still be down hear” i started to make my way down the creek to see where the deers crossed. About ten metres downstream i fund a mud crossing. (thats pic2, you can see deer and pig tracks in the mud)

after looking at the tracks and taking a pic i was about to light up smoke and call it a day when i looked downstream (pic3) and saw a pig (black dot in the pic3) in one ditches... i was about ten to fifteen minutes staring dumbfound at it thinking to myself that it must of herd the shot before... not its lucky day i guess.

Kneeling down to take the shot i lined up the pigs neck with the iron sights and CRACK! A hit but the cheeky bugger started to run. So while on the fly i unloaded the rifle flicked out the case and loaded and snapped the rifle and just before it ducked under some bushes i stoped and let fly another round. While running around the bush a reloaded ( this being my first brakeaction rifle. I was surprise how fast you can reload them when out in the field... it might of helped that i was playing around with shotguns for the past four days.) and found the pig on the other side climbing the bank with its guts hanging out i took a shot at it and thought i missed at the time... the pig rolled down the hill a bit and laid their moving a bit so i walked up and sticked it just above the front legs. After having a well deserve smoke i took pic3 (in pic3 you can see the first shot in the centre of the neck second ripped the belly and the third shot that i thought i missed actually hot his back hoof )

Not long after that i head my mates ute so i climbed up the bank and walked to the fence line to see him making his way along it. He pulled up, told me he heard the shots and if i got any deer “nope i missed but got a pig”

The last pic was when my mate came down to have a look so he took this trophy pic and to give me a hand to take the pig out of the gully so we could get rid of it at the property tip.

and it looks like you gave that pig a bit of a stomach ache - i guess there are some things even a pig can't stomach.

Storey is up. sorry if it not the best yarn, im not the best person to put my thoughts down for people to understand.
Yes kombi it a .308 when out in the field you cant notice it kick but when i put the scope on i lave to get a rubber recoil pad because the pit of plastic on it now lets the rifle slip after the shot and i can see you could get a black eye if you had a scope on.

Thanks Chappers , fertile looking country , good to see the Bailkal in action . bs recurves got one in 7.62 X 39 and I was really impressed with it . I'm interested in the haversack your wearing mate , looks military in origin what can you tell me about it as I've just switched to using a haversack myself for a hunting bag but I'm using one of those heavy hemp types as the soft material is silent in the bush . The only drawback I noticed last hunt was it needs seperate chambers sewn into to seperate my camera and possibilities gear .

Cheers Jacko, near the creeks it looks all lush but outside the bank at this time of year its just blond grass (dry season).

I can see why Bsrecurve was impress with his, i find the single shot fun and more of a challenge than bolt action i don’t know if he agrees with my but i like to get his thoughts of a brake action.
I was surprise how fast you can reload them when you need too.

That bag i got is a Maxpadition, Colossus bag.

its a good bag for a day worth of hunting can store what gear you need plus ammo and some food.

The main reason i got it was that i use it as sling for my rifle(not whats it made for but it works), attach the rifle at both ends when walking to cat like a normal sling or you have the butt of the stock attach only you can have you hands free for what need and you can also bring the rifle up to your shoulder ready to shoot... that how a got that shot off at the deer while i was climbing down the washout.

That is a top bag.
A tad pricey after conversion but if it's as good as you say well worth it.

May I ask a really dumb question? What type of deer do you have in Australia? Are these native deer? Are they like our whitetails? Are they the ancestors of Red Stags released by the colonists?

Mannyrock all Deer are introduced and considered feral . Unfortunatly the Bambi syndrome is alive and well and many folks just love to look at the pretty deer instead of eating them and hunting access is a premium !

Off the top of my head we have Sambar , Red Deer and Wapiti crosses also running around , Fallow , Chital or Axis [ very likely the species in Chappers article ] Hog Deer and Rusa both Javan and Molluccan . In New Zealand just across the ditch [ Pacific ] there is the same species we have here plus also Whitetail , Sitka , was once many decades ago Moose . There may be a species or 2 I've missed , any help boys ?

The Red deer is quite controversially on the Queensland coat of arms . They where released in the Brisbane Valley in the 19th century . Fallow deer where released at Pikedale Staion near Stanthorpe in the 19th century as well . Most feral deer populations have established due to Deer Farm's that used to trade mostly in Velvet going belly up and releasing them or from escapes .

I've got Red and Rusa deer living within 10 minutes of where I live but can't touch them as theyre in State Forest

I think the only one i can pick up on Jacko is Fallow, they are mostly around Warwick area.
also correct that i was after Chital that day (around that area we have Chital and Red Deer)

Mannyrock i would say from what i have been told is that Red or Sambar deer are like your whitetail deer.
In QLD we don’t have hunting seasons at all, we have a three tier system of pest animals that is regulated by state gov.

This system is for landowners to know what animals are considered pests and as hunters in QLD the only way we can hunt is that we get invited to the property by the landowner to hunt pest animals. There is not crown land that we can use or state parks or forests (you should see the $$$ for the pest program im our states parks and forests, i got to say the NSW gov and the Game Counsel have a good thing going.)

Class one are animals that are not in the state and up to the landowner to make sure they are not on his land. (don’t get too excited the only thing on this list is a ant...)

Class two are the animals that are in the state and controlling these animals are up to local gov, community (this community is of a lot of interest to me and will be asking about this at the pest animal symposium next year, i would recommend going to anybody that hunts in QLD ) or the landowner. (this list is where most of the animals that recreational hunters can hunt are)

Then Class three there is only two types of deer on this list Red and Fallow deer, this is only up to the landowner to take care of them only of his land is next to a environmentally significant area.

BTW, what is this HC controversy that you talk about BBF?

Chapper`s,
Nice looking " porker"!
In any of your hunt`s do you ever come across any of the Brown Taipan`s?
During the time I lived in Perth ( 1972-74) we came across the Tiger,Brown, and the Red Bellied Black snake.

The .308 is a good all aound caliber,what particular load do you normally use?
Also is the Maxpadition/Colossus bag a military issue or is that a commercial made item?

That week we came across a brown while on giving out the molasses, we parked the ute and had a look at him (we were in the car) and the cattle starting to walk to us and snake just started slither away... i never had a problem with snakes, i have the they are as scared of us approach but saying that when im stalking and treading lightly on the ground that the time i start to glance at the ground form time to time.

I always been a fan of the .308, when hunting i use 150 SP because the distance i shoot and the game i hunt 180 would not make much difference.

It not issue to the ADF, not 100% but i think its a commercial item
It a tuff little bag but if you are looking for military issue bag i would recommend the kit bags i cant think of the maker ATM but ill find out for you.

gday fellas - been away from the computer for a few days till now.
the little baikal is a good rig for the money (i got mine for a good deal at the time) - shame everything has gone up here in oz in the last few months.
mine has taken goats, and it used to wear a scope but i don't think this is the kind of gun that should have a scope really.
i consider it to be a 100 yard gun for game, and i much prefer mine without a scope thee days. and really - if you can't get within 100 yards of an animal undetected, then money can't buy what you need....

chappers - the 308 is my favourite all-round cartridge for what i do, and i agree that there's no need to go over a good 150gr soft point (unless you were after scrubbers etc.).
i'm loading the 150gr hornady interlock these days for pigs and goats, and they are a very good balance of expansion and penetration. i will also have some 150gr taipans to try soon.

Bercurve, picked my one up for $380 and i got to say it was worth every cent.

I think i still put the scope on (still looking for a good gunsmith in QLD) but only when the tax man comes around next year.... kinda spent this years tax completing the .22 still need to get it re-blued.

You are 100% saying with just the irons it a great 100m stalking rifle

Im not a re-loader (you could call me a sucker for how much ammo costs) i only played around with FMJ and SP... are the other types of projectiles with the extra cost and what do you recommend?

for what you're hunting mate - i'd just stick with any of the basic factory 150gr softpoints - whatever shoots well (and then stock-up).
in particular, if the factory remington corelokt 150gr ammo shot well, i'd use that personally.
there's no need for the fancy pills out of a 308 for regular ferals - just a waste of money IMO.
