There are tears running down my face I'm laughing so hard.  Can you believe they let me be a moderator?  It should be required reading for everyone to go back a few years and read what they wrote.  I'd delete that post so fast these days...

For that matter, can you believe how long this guy takes to get mad?

Hey, best of luck to you King.  Homestead all you want.  Live off the land.  Wear a coonskin cap and surf the internet.  Whatever gets you excited about life, go for it!  Send me a picture, I'd love to see how it goes.  I'm excited to hear about it.  Please don't wait 3 more years.

As to the merits fo the question... Nah... it's not worth ruining such a good thing with facts.  A guy on the internet says so is good enough for me today!

Amish here (susquhanna valley) pay english (us) taxes and thay also pay there own school taxes.  And most amish would be screwed if the shtf.  They have become to reliant on our ways. Very few farm for a sole living.  Most are in construction.  Some don't get the horse and carrage out unless its sunday.  Many english make a good living as taxi drivers for the amish.
Thank you fellow vets and active duty for our freedom.

That's true.  Here in Hawaii you see a lot of that because of the mild climate.  They call them homeless, but many are just bums.

Sorry no one is going to know what you were talking about now. That one had to go, don't think it would have been quite suitable for women and children. My suggestion is to ask GB if he will give you global mod status for a week so you can clean up past transgressions.  ;D

Over the weekend I took a train trip into NY City and back.  The tracks have a little buffer zone of woods through much of an otherwise pretty built up Northeastern US.  I kept my eyes peeled for homeless shacks and I did indeed see quite a few built along the tracks.  Even a couple that looked like little shanty villages.  A few shelters built in a group.  Not truly homesteads but there is much one can learn from the way those people survive.  There are a few of those sorts of camps around where I live but I've never got too close.  I always try to see what I can observe and learn when I see someplace where someone is living like that.  Outside of the current 'normal' society and surviving on it's edges while the rest of society goes on around them and without them.   Some of them are there because they are mentally ill, drug adicts or some other reason along those lines.  Others may be there for reasons I can't even guess at.  So when I see a camp like that I don't make the assumption that the builder is someone who has nothing I can learn from.  They may well have some valuable lesson that may be vital, if I can remember it when I need it.

Watch these people closely and don't dismiss it as 'living under a bridge and being tougher than the other low lifes.'   It's more complex than that, and under estimating people is a wasted oportunity to learn from them.  They may be stupid and brutal, or maybe not.  And even if someone isn't as smart as you (smart in an overall level of intelligence) that person may have some knowledge about some thing that you can stand to gain.

The modern homeless are in some cases living a 'post shtf' life.  I understand that this thread is more about homesteading than survivalism, but the example still does hold some validity.

I read of a guy that had so much alimony to pay that he couldn't afford to live at even a run down place. So he sold as much as he could, bought a used car and used travel trailer.  He "camped" in national forests free until a forest ranger said something about him being there too long, then he moved it.  Sometimes he parked at truck stops and took showers there.  He worked as some type of traveling salesman or traveled to do his work. He used a PO box for his mail or a relative.  When he was in a national forest, he hunted and fished, lived off the land so to speak.  So his only real expense was fuel, some canned and dry goods, and a few personal grooming items.  Lived fairly cheap.  Most of his money went to his ex and maybe child support.  He said it can be done.

That rings a bell.  Didn't that guy write a book?  I seem to remember reading a decription in a book catalog that was similar enough to that to make me wonder if that's the same guy.

People in large cities are living in cardboard boxes with a George Foreman Grill as thier only utility, cooking and heating. Garbage bags and waste plastics are rain gear, water proofing and insulation. These people may be mentally ill, mentally retarded or addicts but they are resorcefull. The human brain is powerful.

I don't think it's possible to live off the land unless you revert to being an animal in the woods>   However,It is possible to be as SELF-SUFFICIENT as one can be!
This is what living with my Grand parents taught me.

I think Spooked hit the nail on the head.  You can go a long way with self sufficentcy most anywhere.  Taxes, game laws, and tresspassing apply most anywhere in the states.  You could survive for a while playing that game, but it depends on where you go and what you do and who is pressing you on it.

I read as far as the second page and couldnt bear to read the rest.
The answer is the only way for a reliable & sustainable food supply is to manage it from its sprouting/birthing to the end use.
Subsistance is not a reliable option, only way is the hard sweaty way, on a small parcil of land and make it produce with economy of labor.

No doubt. No doubt.

To be honest, I'd never try it in the city though. The city is exactly what I'd want to be leaving behind.

Could be true. We've probably ruined just about all the ecology that it was being done in, in the past.
