Les Paul, Rest In Peace
« on: August 13, 2009, 07:55:44 AM »
Les Paul has died at age 94 after a great life of accomplishment. He truly changed the history of music as we know it, not just as a musician but as one of the great inventors too.

Sorry to hear that. Great musician, but I didn't know he was an inventor. May God bless him and comfort his family in their loss.  POWDERMAN.  :( :(

Les Paul was one of America's great inventors and innovators.

Paul's hey day was in the late 40s through mid 50s. In summary, he was one of the country's most well known guitarists and making good money. Then he revolutionized recording with the invention of multi-track recording. He is an icon in the recording business because of that. He and his wife, Mary Ford, had a tremendous string of hit songs, and they were so popular that they had a television show in the early 50s. Les Paul did not invent the solid body electric guitar, but his early developmental work inspired Gibson to manufacture the now-iconic Les Paul electric guitar, which is one of the few truly archetypal guitars in use today. Many of the recording techniques he developed are still in use today, and many professionals claim that little has been added to the methods of recording since Les Paul developed them.

Paul never quit inventing, and he was, until recently and in his 90s, still performing every Monday night at the Iridium in Manhattan.

Paul is widely regarded as the architect of rock and roll.

He's one of the few people that really changed the world.

Anybody interested in Les Paul and his accomplishments would do well to view the PBS documentary Chasing Sound, which costs about $20 on DVD. It was made on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

(In reference to Leo Fender, Fender was the post-war manufacturing genius who revolutionized the design and manufacture of instruments and amplification. His best known instrument, the Stratocaster guitar, is the very symbol of what an electric guitar looks like, and along with the Gibson Les Paul, is one of the two best known and most desirable electric guitars. Even had he never invented any guitars, he would be famous for having invented the electic bass and making huge advances in amplification. Virtually all guitar amplification today is traceable to a Fender invention. The electric bass revolutionized the way modern music is made.)

Les Paul was the driving force behind the "Humbucking" double coil pick-up sound(Thick and Beefy tone). Just think of Eddie Van Halen in his early days, then he used the same pickup on later albums though switching to a more contemporary styled Kramer guitar, that still had, a double-coil humbucker. Fender's are more "thin" sounding, mostly single-coil pickups mainly good for blues or clean tones.

Les Paul completely changed the way popular music is made as well as how it sounds.  Anybody who has ever played rock & roll has been influenced by Mr Paul.  He was a true innovator and a giant in the industry, may he rest in piece.

Here's an answer that GB might better relate to: He's the Elmer Keith and Sam Colt and Browning of the music world, all in one person. (Leo Fender is the Bill Ruger)

I was in Detroit when Les Paul and Mary Ford were performing at the Rooster Tail.  I was too young for admission and didn't have the cover charge any how.  I got in by busing tables three nights running working for no pay.  Pulled off the same thing several times working for Grahm at the Fillmore in San Francisco.  Then of course I got my draft notice and enlisted.  Que Sera Sera

Skunk, thanks for the post.  Listening to Mary Ford and Les Paul was a great way to start the day.  He performed into his 90's.  What a gift and a love for his craft.

Thanks guys, glad you all liked the video.

Les Paul was always special to many Wisconsin folks because he to was from Wisconsin. In addition to being a great musician and inventor, Les Paul was also a great teacher. One of his many students was Stevie "Guitar" Miller who is also a native of the Milwaukee area.

The guitars he inspired were truly works of art.

I broke mine out today and fired up the Marshall stack in remembrance.

Here's my Les Paul custom, truly the most beautiful guitar I have ever owned.

I know it's dirty, I just got done playing it and it's kind of sweaty.

If I'm not mistaken Steve miller is his Godson.

I saw Les Paul play a seminar in the early eighties. He was what 70 something? Man could he play.

Beautiful Sample of a Les Paul, GrimJim. While my brother was alive, he owned and played hard (among his many Guitars), a 59' Les Paul Custom and a 64' Fender Stratocaster (he bought the Strat new in 64'). Both were shinny black and beautiful. He also had the old Marshall tube amps and both Guitars sounded awesome. When he died unexpectedly at age 43, my nephews and nieces divided up his life long collection of rare Guitars and just peddled them for a fraction of their value. The dumbest of the nephews sold an SG Custom at a yard sale for $150.00. Fortunately, a friend of my brother, who had always loved that particular SG was the buyer. That would have made my brother happy in spite of his son's poor judgment. Anyway, nice Les Paul you have there. I'll bet you play it well.
