How many guns a year
« on: August 13, 2009, 03:55:37 PM »
can you buy (store) before you are put on a list...if there is such. The reason i'm asking is that i've gotten into automatics and i've sold some of my revolvers and i've bought about 5 atuo's in the last 6 months...need I to worry?

There BETTER NOT be a list. And you should be a member of NRA to help keep it that way. Sure don't want to go the way of UK and Australia. Friend of mine live in Ireland for a while.  Was a pain just to have a couple shotguns.

He is an avid shooter but he too was sure there was a list in USA.  He won a .410 once and sold it.  Then kept bugging the DU folks about getting "off the ownership record". He sure confused me on that. An avid gun rights guy who really didn't know the law at all. And that was in Alaska where we have a whole lot less gun laws than most places. Hope it stays that way but the goofy gang bangers in Anchorage may one day do us in. So far they mostly thin each other out and good riddance.

Back in the 1990's, I did a trade-in and I purchase two pistols for it.  My store sales person asked me if I could pick one the same day and the other one the following day.  I curiously asked why.  He said that they need to report the BATF if anyone purchased more than one one gun at the time.  I don't know if that exists today or not but I thought that was kind of weird.

3 or more at one time.  That used to be the number that would put me on the ex-wifes Sh** list..

Dand...I did not know there were any gang bangers in Anchorage.  I wonder if they are everywhere there is an urban population over 5,000?

The last I heard, you get flagged to the BATF if you purchase more than 2 handguns in a day, at least this was the way they did things in Minnesota awhile back.

Then their file on me must have more flags than the UN.

In CA there is the 1 per month law on HG purchases. There has to be at least 30days between purchase

Someone on this or another forum recently said "If you buy more than 1 gun in a 3 month period you are put on a watch list by the ATF and ran a check on"  I have no knowledge either way about it.

I know theres been years that ive bought at least 25 guns. Theyve never been to my house. The cheif of police used to laugh before they went computerized that the registration file cabinet they had had a drawer just for me. I laughed about it but was in there once and he showed me that it was actually true. Got so bad that they gave me a bunch of registration fourms and asked me to please fill them out before i came in to save them the work!

list.. heck , We are all probably on the watch list just for being members of this forum ::)
If you bought any gun that you filled out the registration paperwork for you are already on the list as a gun owner anyway. I would worry more about the IRS than the BATF  ;D

I wouldn't worry to much. As ineffective as most of our government is they can't wade through all the data they have now.

Actually you get flagged if you buy 2+ handguns from the same dealer in a 5 day period.

Simply spread the wealth around to different dealers and no such non-sence exists.

I know the feeling. I've not bought a single gun this year and only been in a gun store twice for powder, once looking and then back later to buy. Just no money this year for guns.

I buy 3 or 4 every month for the last couple years. I used to have a FFL too. So am I am on a list. Every time I buy a firearm I fill out a 4473 which eventually is put onto a data base by the ATF. Law Enforcement can track any gun from Manufacturer to Wholesaler to FFL Dealer to Buyer.
This does not bother me as I never break the Law. I even turned in a Street Sweeper that became a re-classified Destructive Devise in 1994. DD, machine guns, SBR, and silencers can't be owned in Iowa unless one has a Class 3 FFL.

I really like the color of this board..the greens are soothing.

Man, I'm going to tell my wife I'm WAY behind a few of you folks and need to catch up! But I need to watch my nickels too.  Just ordered a 20 ga youth pump for my sons to learn on.

Chris D.  re gang bangers in Alaska: Yes Anchorage has a pretty active bunch of young thugs who keep the cops busy and the citizenry nervous after dark. With our very loose concealed carry rules the thugs run a bit wild.  A 17 yr old girl died last weekend in an underage drinking party shooting- very sad. While we don't compare to NY or LA we have quite a bit of gun play in Los Anchorage as we call it. Drugs are a main focus, and some groups have an ethnic flavor. There was a contract hit in a parking lot a month or two ago. Something about a kid with a $10,000 or $100,000 gold necklace on. Can't remember the details but it gets a little wild some nights in the big city.

You likely don't have anything to worry about a "list".  The worst you could hope for is like was mentioned in CA in that you can legally only buy so many in a given period, but the gun stores will generally take care of that for you (they'll hold additionals until you can pick them up).

We had that in SC (1 handgun per 30 days) until it was repealed a few years back.

FWIW, though I'm down to probably 2 or 3 per year now (trying for mostly handguns now - I never sell my guns and I'm running out of space to put long guns :)), in the past I've bought 3 or 4 in a month and never had an issue.  My background checks still go through pretty much instantly.

The 1958 Gun contol act forbade registration.  That said, BATF has tried constantly to make such a data base.  When I worked at a gun shop we evan had to keep a log of guns that were brought in for repair.  The more than two gun in a week flag is still in effect by the way.  What part of shall not be infringed don't they understand? >:( ???

But the ATF does have a data base. All 4473's are kept by a FFL holder and when the FFL goes out of business it is added to ATF data base. A gun serial nr. can be traced thru manufacturer -wholesaler - dealer and person who bought the it from the FFL. They keep this information forever.

That isn't suposed to be true.  Records are only to be kept 10 years by the FFL.  I remember a court case were an FFL went out of busness and the BATF was forced to release the records for destruction.  I do not remember the names involved but I do remember the event.  Also, once a background check is Ok'ed, BATF have two days to destroy the record. 8)

with multiple hand guns you have to fill out another form with your NICS 4473 FORM You can buy as many as you can afford, But you will be flagged ( delayed) and may have BATFE knock on your door if you buy more than 5 @ ANY ONE TIME as far as collections go you can call BATFE and ask their advice. They arent as bad as they use to be. When I applied for my Class 06 FFL they actually called me and made an appointment to see if I had any questions on what I had to do. So they are trying to change.
