Bouncing balls...
« on: August 14, 2009, 01:41:59 AM »
Over the years I've had projectiles end up somewhere other than downrange. Thankfully, most of these were only BBs fired from a Daisy when I was a boy.

A few larger ones were more memorable and could have done damage. Most were either armor-piercing (steel core) bullets that didn't live up to their name, or lead bullets hitting a 'springy' material like wood or plastic.

The only cannon ball I've had not go far enough away for comfort was with my 1", shooting a lead ball at a flat steel bar angled away at ~30 degrees. I heard the ball hit the ground at what I estimate to be ~25 yds past the target.

Anyway, be mindful of your projectile/target material. Some are safer than others.

And I thought you were going to give a disortation on the tactic of artillerymen bouncing a cannon ball off the ground just ahead of
massed troops and mowing down scores of them creating havoc amonst the ranks............

I have a newspaper story somewhere about an artist who built a cannon in New Jersey, he fired it in some park using a 1" ball bearing,
the ball left the park passed through the kitchen wall of an 80 year old woman continued on through the bathroom wall and proceeded to bounce about off the tiled walls destroying most of the bathroom fixtures and a good amount of tile, needless to say this man ended
up in court for the trouble he caused, it is fortunate he didn't kill someone.

This may seem off topic, but it really isn't...I used to own a .36 cal Navy Revolver, black powder (on topic!) and while I was sure of my far distant background, (I was shooting old glass bottles placed on top of a concrete loading dock waaaay out in the southern Cal. desert), my near background below the targets is what almost got me! As you know, one of the ingredents of concrete is aggragrate of river gravel. Well, they have a propensity to weather out of the concrete leaving small round pockets. I took careful aim at an offending glass jar, fired, and the ball hit and took a "U-Turn" inside one of those pockets left by one of the rocks that had fallen out of the concrete. Heard that ball whiz past my right ear, probably within an inch. Needless to say, from then on, I always make sure of my target, and its background! BoomLover

O.K.. Let's hear the "golf ball" story.  I'm always more than a little concerned when I let one go with my iron.

I had a .22 cal round ball bounce off a phone book and hit me in the chest.

I don't remember the make, might have been Beeman that made the "Perfect rounds" .22 cal lead shot (also in .177, and .20 I think).  But one of those on top of 5 grains 4Fg.  Using one of those really cheap all metal pepperboxes - pot metal frame and grips with lots of cast in scroll work, and a blued barrel with machined in nipples.  Anyway, shooting at about 10 feet, the first 3 went into the book about 1/2 inch.  The next bounced off, hit me in the chest and dropped to the ground.  I was wearing a 1960s issue peacoat, so I barely felt anything.

i will confess , as i was trying to 'splatter a golfball' on a heavy piece of railroad iron/steel . 8)

I WILL NOTE THOUGH , NOBODY I WAS WITH HAD ANY OBJECTION except to hide better than i .

i was flat on my belly hugging the ground , behind the trail ......not too bright in hind sight as GB's do not splatter .     they seem to bounce straight back if you ' not too bright' .

it was close and it could have been     uh uh , .....a bad bump on my head ..... ::)

it was a stupid mistake on my part and i suppose i could have been kilt outright . it WILL NOT HAPPEN AGIAN .

40 yds ,big charge , big BOOM and a boink off tracys tire  which was 'somewhat' to my rear . which was at least 264 yds away from me  .....   ;D

Hey Allen, I'm only on my third or fourth cup of java by 0900, and I need at least six in me before I'm wound up enough to go off on a history diatribe. ;)

Besides which, the Forrest Gump-like dialogue at the end of the video has to trump any kind of history lesson. :D

Woah, Rocklock, man am I glad you followed up that "I'm just jerking you" by letting me know that that's "slange for joking," because that coupled with that other thang bout "nekkkked chasing some other guy," well Rocklock I gotta tell ya that kinda thang gives me the willies, I mean to each his own and live and let live and all that stuff, but Rocklock I gotta tell you I don't roll that way, man you don't know how relieved I am to know you was just jokin, so what say you don't ever bring tripe like that up again, and then good ole Boom won't have nightmares.

;D I couldn't resist bringing that thread back up on the great golf ball bounce description.......

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,174179.msg1098822301.html#msg1098822301

And caused me to create this..........

In Honor of the Golf Ball.............Pardon my poor verse.... Kipling I'm not..... Roll Eyes

More Bounce to the once

Not one! not two! But six ounce’s were charged….
Beneath the noble ball………
The vent was primed and the gun was laid
It’s target a hunk of steel  be played…..
They fired her off  and it’s course  was true
Not with a thonk, not with a twang, but with a
mighty  Ping did it sing!

The noble ball sent on it's way now rebounds
To it's owner in flight!
He hears it come and ducks his head!
For surely if hit he would be dead!
Our noble ball has passed him by
Only to rebound for another try!
Once more it came once more it went
Past its owner’s  great big head…….
So now we see the error that comes
From firing the noble ball at steel ….
For there is more bounce to the ounce
You see, when packed upon so much
Powder with glee………..
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Yeah, I know, but some people do refer to these .50's as cannons. ::)   Ouch! "That's the last one of them we're doin';" ya gotta love 'em!

When I first saw this video some time back it gave me chills...

Years ago I was firing a 50 BMG. We'd been shooting both ball and AP rounds that punched through a 3/4" plate at about ~200 yds with ease. I'd made up a couple of test rounds with 30 cal AP bullets in 50 cal sabots. First shot came screaming back over our heads at very high velocity. It wasn't funny.

The bullet in the video hit the guy's ear muffs. At the velocity and weight it retained (I'm pretty sure it was an AP core), if it had hit him in the head he might now be in a wheelchair, eating strained peas fed to him by a Wife he no longer recognized.

We speak here of making our cannons safe from blowing up. We might also talk about projectile/target safety a bit more often too.

 Just sayin'....

HUH! ??? What have I been trying to decipher ???  You have lost me. No fair!  I do not have a clue as to what you were exchanging.  Generation gap!  I'm of the era where "Bouncing Balls" ment Mitch Miller.  I'll have to pass this off onto my wife; she teaches Special Ed'. Once again, Richard steps in where many think, but few dare to "go there".. I, too, hope this thread doesn't become a "Special Ed" project! Boys, school is out, we are in the big world now, so lets focus on the subject at hand, "Bouncing Balls..." No matter how titlating that may sound, it has a specific purpose for us, and watching which way our balls bounce has to be serious business on this forum! If one doesn't pay attention to the particulars, a ball that takes a bad bonce can seriously hurt or kill someone, anyone, within range until it's kinetic energy has been spent! So, we are looking at a rather serious discussion, (At least, that was the intent!) and we can and do have fun with it, but lets not carry it to extremes! If I'm oversteping boundries here, forgive me for sticking to the safety issues....I for sure ain't a prude, just interested in the concequences of badly bouncing balls! (Huh?) LOL, BoomLover

HUH! This may become a class project.
