Shotgun slugs for yotes
« on: August 14, 2009, 01:18:48 PM »
I have a buddy who only has a 20 Ga.  Deer slug barrel on his 870 for sabots, has anyone ever shot a yote with this combo?  He just can't afford anything else right now and he doesn't want' to borrow my .204 (say's it's too fast for him. lol) I know the slugs will work at putting them down, but what kind of fur damage are we talking about?  Hopefully he can get them at 100 yds or so.  This will be his first year out for yotes.

I would say it will likely be a sad year for him.  Go with some number 4 buck and call them in a little closer.  Larry

Forget selling your fur to a furbuyer with a slug killed dog.  I did a skull for a guy that shot a yote with a 12ga SST and the fur for trophy purposes would have been easily fixed by a taxidermist.  I was actually surprised at how little the fur was dmaged.  I have seen 243 bullets do more.  My advice would be to tell your bud to get over the speed issue and get behind that .204.  If he refuses than I would have him test a number of slugs out to 125yds and see which one hold the tightest groups.  He should be in the downwind position each and every hunt.
It's all a hot mess...........

I've skinned and stitched a few coyotes that were shot with slugs and its not a pretty picture, but if you skin them quickly after they are shot you can clean up a lot of the damage. Aside from the obvious tears in the hide the real damage is blood soaking into the pelt and being allowed to set for a while. Worm
