A lot of us remember BOTH.
Some served reluctantly and some served with a dream.
Much like any conflict, there are both sides of the fence with the same uniform.
But I understand.

Wiliamlayton:  We maybe have seen each other.  I spent a lot of time in the Haight Ashberry district during 68-71.  Met a lot of groovy people there, and also a lot of little Hippy Chicks that just wanted to be accepted.

I was an Air Force Recruiter at the time, recruited a lot of people from that area.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Well, I was only up there a couple of times.
When I was in the LA area I was coming from somewhere, going somewhere.
It was just a perfect storm.

John,

Sorry, but Johnny is no longer with us. Lets just say that he was "blinded" by the light. :D

I have never understood the hippie phenomenon. It was about 10 years before my time. It seemed like a national fad. I never respected it because there was so much drug use.

Do you happen to know of any history books that explain how the fad got started, how it progressed, and why it ended?

I was there, but not a Hippy.  In my openion this is the way I saw it.

The communes started breaking apart, when the workers that contributed the money, realized they were supporting the deadbeats.

The reality of poverty set in when all the young Hippy Chicks needed to feed their babies.  And no one had a job.

The men had moved on to greener unpregnant pastures.

And everyone realized the dream was unobtainable.

Hello Questor,
I too came of age and watched the hippy revolution.  I saw it change from a set of ideals to a mockery of what could have been.  To grab ahandle on some of it go to wikipedia and find Robert Heinlein.  In addition to information there be informed that after serving at a desk through WWII (tuberculosis had forced him out of the Navy) he assembeled the think  tank that included Asimov and 2 other Science Fiction writers.  Working for a senior naval officer (Nimitz) at the end of the war they made recomendations for an atomic powered navy, submarine misseles, air to air/sea to sea misseles, and made the point that if the Air Force was not challenged by the Navy the inevitable expansion to other planets would bypass a water only navy. (check out how many pilots and commanders were Navy) Stranger in a Strange Land was written to shock the morality and single track minds in America.  A lot of the concepts in this book led to the start of the hippy generation. That and subsequent books held positions on morals, marriage, government, fidelity, human geome projects, weapons, surrival, artificial intelligence, military service, and the right to die when you want to.  Also look up his Naval Academy address "the Pragmatics of Patriotisim".  It is the single best explanation of why I am a veteran.  Heinlein belived firmly in surrival of the race and the individual, duty and resposibility as a way of life, women and children as the future of the race, being good, very good with your hands, and never ever going unarmed.

Look for the real hippies now and quite a few are in positions of power and wearing suits.

SOURDOUGH. Bout the way I remember it too. Everything had to be free, but nobody worked or had a job. Never participated in any of that crappola. I wouldn't have gone to woodstock if I had lived there. Some here may have liked it, but all I remember is drugs, sex, drugs, nudity, more drugs, and deadbeats. Did I mention the drugs?? Never was a part of that culture, never wanted to be. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I do remember some of the fallout of that generation. There were a lot of drug rehab homes near where I lived. They called them methadone clinics.

I'm glad none of us judge others and live perfect lives .
Could it happen today , only if the govt. didn't find out and want permits , police , fire and medical on site . When that happens it would become everyone wanting to be taken care of instead of doing for themselves and others .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I seem to recall that there was a 30th anniversary Woodstock gathering in 1999 that was marked by violence, expense, and an overall bad time. Perhaps I'm remembering it wrong. Timing was everything for the original Woodstock gathering.

We were just coming out of the Hip generation and with it came a lot of disfavor with the status quo.
Nothing new under the sun but things forgotten.
