excessive front sight wobble "Ruger Revolver"
« on: August 16, 2009, 12:09:24 PM »
New Model Super Blackhawk SS with 4 5/8" barrel
This is the model with the cross pin retaining the front sight blade which sits on a ramp.

My problem is that the front blade itself wobbles both left to right and front to back. The movement is bad enough to throw my groups. What can be done to remedy this? I'm thinking that either the cross pin that retains the blade is broke or more likely the hole in the blade itself was drilled oversized.

First, remove the crosspin and see if the sight blade is loose in the slot - it may need a thin shim slipped down into the slot alongside the bottom part of the blade.

Then, clamp the sight (either with or w/o a shim as needed) in it's slot. (clamp from the top of the blade and the bottom of the barrel)

Redrill the crosspin hole with the next biggest drill bit that will just barely not be able to fit in the hole.

Then, reverse the drill bit, using it's shank as the new crosspin for the hole you just sized - grinding it to length before locktiteing it's final installation.

or perhaps remove the offending sight and reinstall with the hole, blade and all epoxy covered. reinstall the cross pin and clamp in position. After the epoxy (I'd use AcraGlass) has set but before it's fully hard remove the excess with a plastic chisel. Be careful to NOT alter the blades attitudem, just cut away the excess that's been sqeezed from the recess. It's hold rimfire barrel liners in place and should hold the sight blade in position. If you elect to replace the pin use a slightly larger pin (tapered) so that it will wedge into place..The shank of the drill that made the hole usually won't work as they almost always cut the hole the same size as the shank or a bit larger..

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to use some Loctite Epoxy around the exposed edges of the blade all the way around and then scrape away the excess. If this does not hold, then I will attempt to remove the sight blade and try another method. Thanks for the warm welcome to the site!  :)

Buy a new blade and cross-drill it yourself using the CORRECT size drill.  It's under five bucks.  Get a couple extras while you're at it.
