replacement barrel for 336 ?
« on: August 16, 2009, 06:32:31 PM »
Anyone know of a source for a replacement Marlin 336 barrel ? Would love to have a 38/55 shortie, but may settle for a factory 30/30 replacement if nothing reasonably priced is available.

dant:  contact the Montana Rifleman (add a www and a .com and you should get there).  They manufacture barrels for everything and lever guns are some of their favorites.  They can make you whatever you want, in whatever length you prefer, with the rifling and twist of your choice and properly install it on your rifle.  HTH.

Might want to check out Numrich for a replacement barrel.  Another option is to keep your eyes open for a used take off.  Someone like Norm Johnson or Robert Hoyt can easily rebore a 30 WCF or 32 HP to 38-55 for you.  I know Hoyt's prices are pretty reasonable.  In the past I've had pretty good luck keeping my eyes open and finding '93 barrels in 38/55 and 32/40 for reasonable prices.  If they have bad bores they are a candidate for a liner if I want to keep the same calibre.  The 32/40 could of course be rebored to 38/55 as well as relined to 32/40.

I bought mine from Marlin last year.  $314 for the barrel(octagonal Cast Bullet), a new fore end, new fore end cap, return shipped to my door completely assembled and ready to go.

Ditto for me.  Got the 24" octagonal .30-30 barrel installed by Marlin for $315.  I asked for my old barrel back and they honored that request.  The new forearm is beautiful.  They saw that I had sling swivels so they installed a forearm cap with the stud for a swivel, and included one without the stud in case I wanted to go that route.  Super customer support.

www.35caliber.com has some neat services according to the feedback I read on their website. What correspondence I've had with them has been first-rate.

I've picked up (2) 336's in very good shape in the last year. Both were $300 ea. I would look for a good used one, but time may be a factor for you.
