Iron sight windage adjustment.
« on: August 17, 2009, 10:47:30 AM »
I realize I must drift the iron sights on my 1894CB since it is hitting 10" to the left @ 50 yards. So, would you move the front sight or the rear sight or does it matter? I have a small brass hammer I plan on using, unless there is a better tool for this job.

A sight pusher is a better tool but very expensive if you don't already have one which I'd guess most gunsmiths should. I always use a brass rod personally. Ya might wanna try moving the front a wee tad first then finish up with the rear so neither is moved all that far off center. Remember move front sight opposite to how you move rear and that also means opposite of what you want bullet impact point to do.

Hey cheese, one of the reasons i went to the skinner peep on my 1894 was due to the fact that i could afford the peep(adjustable) and not the tool! not only that but i hate banging on a new gun! and I rarely stop at the right spot (either way) so its hit and miss and rehit

Cheese:  Brownell's has a inexpensive sight adjustment tool that should work for you.  It is a screw set-up that pushes the front sight blade and it works for me.  I haven't yet tried it on a rear sight but I'm thinkin' 'bout tryin'.....

You need to move your rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go or the front sight in the direction opposite that you want the bullet to go.  You might be able to move each sight somewhat to get your poi to poa.

One of my Winchester BB94s in 444 came with the sights positioned 'off'.  My front sight blade is all the way to one side to get it to shoot to poa.  If I pull the front sight hood off the overall sight picture is ok but with the hood in place my sight picture is pretty 'crowded'.  If I hadn't scoped the thing I would be messin' with the rear sight position so as to bring my front sight more to the center of my sight picture.  HTH and Good Luck.

ps:  make certain neither of the sights is screwed down into place or you will be trying to adjust the sight against a screw.

$60 plus is not what I call cheap. I checked the $24 one by S&W and it is just a puch and alignment tool, or at least that is all I could find on S&W website.

Use a brass drift and a small hammer.  Back up the front sight ramp with a block of wood (you can lay the rifle on the bench , then slip the wood under the ramp) so you don't put stress on it.  Go slowly, it doesn't take a whole much movement of the sight to make a big movement out at 100 yards!  I put a dab of White Out on the sight base and the ramp or barrel so you have a visual reference of how much you move it.
