Trapping Muskrats and mink in Ponds
« on: September 30, 2003, 02:14:04 PM »
A man told me the other day that he had got me permission to trap a golf course not too far from my home. He said there was three ponds that had muskrats and a few mink in them. He also said there is a river that goes through the golf course that has mink and other fur bearing critters on it. He also said that they had saw coyotes and foxes around there too. My question is about the ponds. How should I set them up for mink and rats?I've never trapped ponds before. What do I look for? Will there be slides where the rats are coming on and off the bank? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ky,look for dens, usually on a golf course these are very evident. You can set 110s or colony traps at the dens. Also look for dung piles and feedbeds--set these with stoploss.  Tom

Bog gave you some good info.  The mink will be in same areas looking for muskrats for meals so you have a good chance at them too.  You can make blind sets for the mink or bottom edge sets with conis if situations  present themselves.  While yr at it you can run a canine line with yr water line and  have a good trap line.

Just to add alittle to this.  Check for holes above the bank also.   The muskrats need air like us and them mink on my line anyway 9 times out of ten will be caught going down the hole from the top.  If there are not holes in sight because of being in deep water, make pocket sets around the pond.  A piece of apple in one and  fish in the other, that will clean them up along with the coon and mink.   Have fun.   Justafarmer

And since your on a golf course you should be able to drive right ot the ponds.  So I would throw out some rat floats as well as the sets already mentioned.  You should be able to get the most of them in a few nights time.
