Let the dogs out and they got it from a skunk. The ran into the house and made a be line for the bed! Couldn't stop them fast enough. Gave them two baths a piece...the house smells bad, the bed smells bad...when she gets home from work tonight she will be very angry!

Seriously, you really did nothing wrong, stuff happens. That's just the way it goes sometimes.
All that said, I'm glad I'm not trying to break that news to my wife

The same thing happened to my wife about 15 years ago. I was sound a sleep when I smelt this terible stench. It was so bad it woke me up. Turns out the wife let our German Sheperd out for a bit. When he come back a little while he stunk from skunk!!!!!!!!!!!!

She tried to give him a bath before I noticed. The thing was the bath tub was right next door to the bedroom. Even with the bedroom door shut you could not stop the smell. I laugh about it now but I sure was pissed that night. Dale

Tomato juice?? That won't help. You need either:
1. Tequila, lime juice, triple sec, crushed ice...or
2. A couple really nice bottles of wine.

Oh yeah, and some flowers.

Of course, none of that really takes care of the smell, but your wife is happier

The flowers might be of some help but the wine bottles may just go upside your head! I'd get started with the tomato juice and hope for clemency! Could always say that fool from Texas assured me it(tomato juice)would work!

Where I live, there is a 24 hour drive thru pet wash at the car wash for these situations. It sounds like a stupid idea, but I've gladly paid the fee more than once.

There is a recipe for skunk odor removal that my wife has from Montana hunters whose dogs get skunked all the time. It contains one quart of fresh Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and one teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Mix together in a open bucket, work into the dog's fur but avoid the mouth, nose and eyes, leave on for 10 minutes and rinse - repeat if necessary. Do not leave the mixture in a bottle or closed container as it will explode.

That was for the dogs. For your wife I might suggest a gift certificate for a couple of hundred $ to the local bedding store, hair shop and restaurant so that after your wife buys new bedding she can get her hair done (as she most likely tore most of it out when she found out what happened) and then end the day with a nice dinner......... Doubtful but tomato juice really does work. My Mother and Father had a Boston Terrier and his favorite chew toys were cats. The little dummy never learned that a skunk wasn't just a big, long haired cat. He thrashed quite a few skunks over his lifetime and every time he got a tomato juice bath. He might get two or three scrub cycles but it always cleaned him up. It works on people too. My Dad did the tomato juice thing a couple of times from walking into the barn in the dark without a flashlight.

We have experienced this several times, contrary to popular belief tomato juice has not been a very effective means of removing the odor for me. The recipe from Mikey using the peroxide is one of the best I have ever used after all isn’t basking soda used to deodorize most everything. I always cover the dog completely being careful not to get it in their eyes; I leave the mixture on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing and repeat if necessary. You need to thoroughly cover the dog (or cat) with the mixture.

Another thing recommended by my Vet, rinse the dogs eyes with Visine or Liquid Tears to remove the musk from their eyes otherwise it may lead to an eye infection.

Don't feel to bad , most of the bird dogs we have had like to roll in anything that comes from the south end of anything north bound or dead , really old dead ( main reason they don't come in house ).
Never will forget the day pop's dog slipped off as we got to the truck . Pop called and here comes this setter covered in paper and poop .

Well, it turned out better than I thought, she wasn't nearly as mad as I thought. She looked up on the internet and found a combination of peroxide, baking soda and dish soap, this took the smell off the dogs. Then she washed eveything on the bed a few times where one dog jumped, she had me throw out the sofa where the other dog jumped, which was an excuse to buy a new one...dogs didn't touch much else I managed to grab them before they could do more damage. Seems if you get that smell into fabric, it may never come out. I didn't know what to do before she came home, just tried using regular dog shampoo, and this didn't do much of anything. Now she shopping for a brand new small sofa.

I thought about that....really I did. My wife is a pretty good sport though. She didn't hold it against me, but she gave me a game plan for the next time that happens. She put the stuff she mixed up on a piece of paper in case it happens again.

Never cared for house dogs, those are hers.
And the direct spray from a skunk is a lot worse than smelling it from a distance....wow...nasty.

Had a lab that loved to go after skunks.
and found this stuff called SKUNK OFF. they sell it in most of the big box Pet stores.
works wonders on the dogs, your clothes and the bedding.
I would wash the mutt and then if she got into the house, I would toss her bed in the washing machine. I would just add some of the skunk off to the laundry detergent. Will work on your bedding and clothes as well.
then I would follow the directions for the carpet on the spray bottle.
Hope this helps and you get to read it before your wife gets home.
You may want to have dinner plans out as well as flowers for her when she gets home.

This brings to mind a story from my youth, as a young man I was stationed at England AFB, La, I shot on the Base Pistol Team and while at the range one day met an older gentleman that invited me to go coon hunting with his group. After a while we became very good friends, I was accepted in the group and invited regularly to hunt with them. One of the men raised and trained several different breeds of hounds, he advertised in a coon hunting magazine and sold dogs to people from all over.

One afternoon I had a call from the man that raised the dogs and was asked if I would like to ride over to Natchez, MS where he was to meet a guy from Alabama who wanted to buy some dogs. I agreed, we loaded the dogs in his truck and off we went arriving just after dark. When we drove into the meeting location just outside of Natchez there was a new white Cadillac with a man and woman setting inside, the man got out and walked over to the truck and introduced himself as the person wanting the dogs, but first he wanted to see them run. My friend knew of a place a few miles away and agreed to run the dogs in that area. We offered to let him ride with us but he insisted on driving himself. After driving a few miles we turned down a muddy trail where my friend again offered to let the man ride with us, but he still insisted on driving himself. After slipping and sliding for a while we stopped and let the dogs go. A short time later the dogs treed, with the man following close behind we waded through the swamp and pulled the dogs off the tree. On the way back to the truck the dogs came across a skunk, they were trained not to chase, but got too close and the skunk gave them a spray.

Back at the truck the guy from Alabama pulled out a roll of bills and counting out payment for two of the dogs, he opened the back door on the new car and threw them in. They were covered with mud, smelled from the skunk and were jumping all over the place. The woman was going ballistic, as we headed back to the highway I could se her arms waving as se was making jesters and could only imagine what se was saying.

As we sat in an IHOP having a bite before heading home I wondered if the ole boy would make it back to Alabama alive and what the total cost of those dogs would be when you consider the damage to the car.
I think this was one of my last coon hunting trips, but one I will never forget
