Newbie question---don't laugh!
« on: August 18, 2009, 12:33:10 AM »

I've just bought my first o/u shotgun, a 20 gauge Franchi Diamond with single trigger from Dicks.  I placed snap caps in both barrels and tried it out.  My problem is, how do you get the second barrel to fire?  The manual doesn't explain this, and I can't find it on the net.  I suppose it is too simple for most folks but not to me.  There is a selector near the trigger than determines firing order, but is this supposed to be used each time both barrels are utilized?  All right, go ahead and laugh now--it's good for the soul.    ;D

Tap the stock on the floor or hit the end of stock with your hand. If it is like my Daly the second shot cocks on recoil. No laughing just learning.

Black lab you spoke truly.  I did just as you said and the second barrel fired.  Many thanks!

Don't think it cocks the second bbl on recoil , you cock both hammers on opening or closing depending on gun. You reset the trigger for the second bbl from inerta (sp) during fireing . Its a safety to keep both bbls from fireing at the same time. If it cocked on fireing how would a selective trigger work ? Some guns have mechanical triggers instead of inerta (sp) that don't need the rap to reset .
Not trying to be a SA just offer more to explain.

Appreciate the elaboration Shootall.  I'm finally getting a better understanding of how this all works.  My only prior experience with shotguns was about 40 years ago with an old Stevens 311.

My new Franchi has ejectors--something I have no experience with.  I'm wondering if I will get to like the ejectors, or if I can have my gun changed to extractors.

No need to change. If you're in a hunting situation and in a hurry to reload let it kick them out and pick up later. If not in a hurry just learn to hold your hand over the end of breach as you open it to stop them in the chamber and then pick them out. Skeet, trap and sporting clays shooters do it all the time.
