conradj, It's more important how it's stored than how old it is. I have 22 ammo thats more than 20 years old and it still shoots fine.

I store mine in a cool dry place. In military ammo cans.

I have been shooting some I bought in the early '70s. I can't tell a bit of difference in it and the stuff I bought this year. I always store my ammo in a room that never gets down to freezing. It could be called cool I guess, it's never as hot in there as it is outside but can still get in the high 90s.

The biggest thing is to keep it dry.  Low humidity is even better.  Rimfires aren't sealed very well and moisture is what will kill them the fastest.  pow pow fsst  fssst  fsst pow  fsst

conradj, some rimfire bullets have wax on the lead to act as a lubercant. I would take a soft dry rag and see if the white can just be wiped off. Do a couple and see how much lubercant is left. I don't think it will hurt to shoot the ammo either with or without the white on it. If it wipes off then try a few to see if they are leading your barrel. Regards,

Just the other day I was shooting some Remington standard velocity ammo that is just over 40 years old. 1 inch groups @ 50 yards.

did you cronie them?

any velocity loss or did you have to re zero your gun from using new to old ammo?

conradj, You should put a croniegraph on your christmas list. I think as much as you like to keep track of velocities you would really enjoy one. ;D I have one but seldom use it. When I do it's usually for working up new loads.

this post nailed it ! its the humidity(moisture) that  will ruin your ammo!

I still have quite a bit in ammo cans that is 25 years old. It shoots fine. I just gave a brick to one of my buddies boys to shoot and it worked good for them. I use the older stuff for practice.

The best shooting ammo in my repro Win 52b is some Win high speed I bought in the mid 1970's.  I hoard the few boxes I have left for that gun and it works fine. Here in Alaska, cool is easy. Dry can be pretty easy depending on location.  Just be sure its not stored where the sun shines on the boxes or other similar abuse.  I had some real bad stuff (Wards) that he had stored on a shelf where the sun could heat it daily for part of the year. Only about 50 of the hundred would fire at all.

My wife just found a .22lr round in our cloths drier.   Must have been in the pocket of my jeans and went threw the washer and drier.  What do you think the odds are of that one working?   :o  ;D

Slim! but it may! I had some that went under water in a canoe capsize and about 40 % still shot!

Dump them!  Spend a few dollars and replace them.

All you need is one squib round to ruin your day.

I have no intention of even attempting to shoot the round that went threw the washer & drier.

Never thought anyone would think about firing rounds that have been through the wash guys. ::)  I was responding to conradj's question regarding 20year old .22 rounds.

I can just picture my gun locked in a vise with me trying to pound a squib round out of the barrel with a mallet and wooden dowel.  :'(

Oh just send it to Tim!  he'll fix it!   ;D

The ones we had that went swimming either fired cause they did not get wet or they acted as snap caps. I suppose because the round is so small if some is wet its all wet!

I have had lots of 22s that went through the washer and dryer. The still ruined a rabbits day. As a kid I had a single shot rifle and dumped ammo in my pockets mom often washed and dried them it seem. I know some that where washed 2-3 times before they where shot up I don't ever remember any duds or any more that normal any way.
Age may cause problems but not in your lifetime unless they are in high humidity area.

Funny about this thread coming on now.  About three weeks ago while clearing some junk out of a corner of the basement I found a box of stuff from when my wife and I moved our family into this house in 1976. In that box was a brick of Federal Monark standard velocity .22LR's I bought at the Seattle Police Athletic Association Range pro shop while I was in High School.

I graduated in 1962, so that ammo is now at least 47 years old. Two weeks ago I took the brick to the gravel pit I like to shoot at and shot half of it up.  It wouldn't operate my 10-22, but every round fired.  In my Rom. M69 and my old Hawes Western Sherriff .22 SA it was great.  Other than a softer report than the hi-speed stuff available now it was fine.  The part of the basement where that box was hidden is always cool and dry.

The price pencilled on the brick was $1.99.  I bought my ammo there because my Uncle Buddy was a Seattle Policeman and got a pretty good discount on the stuff sold in the pro shop at the range.  .38 special wadcutter practice loads were two bits for a tray of 50.  Uncle Buddy wrangled me a Colt DA service revolver the dept. had mustered out.  The range armorer checked it out and reblued it for me.  I used to carry that thing in my lunch box on the bus from N. Seattle to the Duwamish Wye every Saturday during the Summer to shoot.  I paid for my range fees and ammo by sweeping up, go-fer-ing, and tending the loading machines.  He got me a new .22 Ruger Auto pistol there for my 17th birthday.  I had it until my daughter was born in '74 and I had to sell it for some quick money for something useless, rent or food probably.  I don't remember what happened to that old Colt DA.

Oldest I ever shot was some WWII 22lr my dad had brought home from the base he was at from '42 to '45 and it all function in my '52 model Mossberg 142A and the '59 Ruger 4.5" Standard about two, maybe three years ago. Never had a dud or FTE and was surprised for 60+ year old ammo. Wished I had had couple of bricks instead of 3 boxes IIRC and a partial. The Mossberg was shooting sub 1/2" groups at 50 yards with the ammo, hard to beat a 60+ year ammo, 55+ year old rifle and 50 year old pistol.

That Mossy with adj trigger and 18" barrel and Walnut stock set my dad back almost $30 new when I was 7 in the summer of '52 when dad's monthly income was maybe $200 a month at most. I would have to spend $750 on the grandson sitting here beside me to equal the % of his income my dad spent on me, WOW!!!! I never looked at it that way before.

Military flares come in round watertight tubes with screw off tops.  You can usually find these at surplus places.  Inside they have a little moisture absorb cartridge.  They will hold about 500 rounds of rimfire.  I bought mine for a dollar each.  IMO the ammo life should be much longer than mine that I store in them, plus, if you had to they could be buried or hid.

I haven't been shooting for 25 years but recently got back into it. I had a couple of hundred rounds of Remington Rifle Match left from .22 rifle silhouette days and they still shoot well. I use them as my "proving" ammo for rifle testing.
