I need a mild load for a Colt 45 reproduct.
« on: September 30, 2003, 05:19:50 PM »
I went to the gun store today to buy components for my 45 colt single action reproduction. I bought primers, cases and 400 rounds of 255 sw. My problem is, I can't fine any loads for that bullet weight. Ken Waters has a few loads, but I don't have any of those powders. None of my manuals have loads for 255gr. bullets. My two powders are Unique and W-296.  Anyone have a load for 800-950fps with either of these powders? Or sugest a better powder?  OOBuckshot

I have been loading 230gr hardball loads with 10.5gr of W-231 with real good success. About 1000fps and not finicky about powder position in the case. Also loading 185gr JHP loads with 11.5grs W-231. About the same fps. I would think you could work up a simmilar load in 255 without much trouble.   KN

My faviorite plinking load in my Blackhawk and Trapper is 6.8 of Unique and a 255 grain lead bullet (too light for jacketed bullets).  Mild and very accurate out of both pistol and rifle.  As an added benefit, the brass lasts for a long time.

Ok, 8.0 gr Unique for about 800/850 fps (depends on the gun).  Up to 9.0 gr Unique for 900/950.  There you go, 8 for fun, 9 for hunting.  (I only use 9.0 gr anymore.  Filed the sights to be dead on at 50yds)  Use that Unique and enjoy it!    44 Man

After shooting a few loads with 9gr Unique in your pistol (and similar frames), I believe you will find it about all you want in that pistol. In addition to not having the frame strength of the Ruger, it also does not have the weight to counteract the recoil. That load should get you about 900fps or so and at the shorter ranges will handle the average deer and boar better than you might imagine. For many years, 8.5gr has been my factory duplication load and usually clocks about 850fps. Going below about 8gr with Unique is not recommended because it begins to burn erratically and is below its designed working pressure range. BOL.
