Can your remember all the calibers you have used on deer?????
« on: August 18, 2009, 03:23:23 PM »
:) If you can remember all the calibers or guages, what have you used?  The thread on what, where, etc. made me think of this question. What do you have to say????

If I thought long and hard on it I might manage at least most of what I have actually made kills with but all that I've taken hunting and come home empty handed with as well? I seriously doubt it.

Pretty small list compared to most out there I'm sure: 12ga, 20ga, 7.62x39, 7.62x54, .243, .30-06, 8x57 mauser. Most on the list were used once to harvest. 12ga, .30-06, and 8mm used for big chunks of years.

Hmm,
257Roberts, 6.5x55, 6.5TCU, 30WCF, 308W, 30-06, 32WSPCL, 8x57, 356W, 357Mag, 40-82WCF, 41Mag and 45Colt have all been carried in season.

The 257Roberts, 6.5TCU, 30-06, 32WSPCL, 8x57, 357Mag and 41Mag have all donated to the freezer.

The 8x57 has been my working rifle since '63, and the 41Mag my sidearm of choice since '80.

They all have their own stories, but the 8x57 Persian Carbine has really 'made my day'!

Shootall, what state allows dogs AND rifles???? I always thought dogs and shotguns were a southern tradition. Seems to me I did read an article many, many years ago about using beagles for deer and they used rifles. Maybe it was in Ark. or La. Sounds interesting to say the least.

a couple with 30-30, one with 7.62 x39, one with a 22{yea i know, dont ask}20 sumpin with a 243, 4 with a 06 includeing biggest deer i ever killed and a 3 with a 6.5x55 which is now my present round of choice.if i had to choose between them all id prob go with the 243 as being the one that killed quickly the most consistantly.but then i used it for many years and never had any prob with it. im hopeing the 6.5 will do as well for me in the future.

WCH Virginia has several counties that we use deer and rifle . On any one drive you will see rifles from 300 win mag to 243 , bolts , levers , single shot and even a combo gun . add slug guns and buckshot guns and things get fun. And sometimes a handgun . I leave the house with a shotgun for slugs , one for buckshot and a rifle or two some days . Then i get lazy and take a shotgun .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

WCH, sometimes in 100 acres we can move over 20 deer in several directions at one time . Its wild ! Then we have one tract that is 1400 acres and we may use 25-30 dogs along with 4-5 drivers ( the guys with the dogs ) . this would be a half day hunt with as many as 5-7 bucks taken and on a doe day maybe a dozen . Not that this happens every time but enough to make ya keep comming back .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I was having a conversation just today and realized that as best I can remember I have never owned a 280.  I cant think of anything else that I have not hunted with,In fairly common calibers.  I have not killed a deer yet with my 375 or my 500 handi ( after breaking my neck and back I dont really care to shoot these , but I enjoy watching other people shoot them  ;D).  I think this was easier than listing what I have taken deer with..I have prolly killed the most with my 22-250 0r 223.

In Eastern NC we allow dog hunting and in many counties it is also legal to hunt with a rifle.  There is an added element of danger when shooting rifles across fields.  You need large tracts.  Some dog clubs do not allow rifles for this reason and some timber companies prohibit rifles for safety of employees, liability, and PR.  I have done both - shotgun and rifle.  Whenever you hunt with one, you need the other.
