Thats an easy 1 for me, used a 270 for the 1st 3 years ( age 12-15) Then went to a 30-30. 300 Win. for 2 years and then 30-06. Ended up with the 30-06 and still have one but bought the 45-70 Buff. Classic gets out a LOT cuz In Miss. I can use it for muzzle Loader season, as well as Gen. Firearms. Killed 1 with a 50 cal muzzlerloader as well and o yea a 7mm-08.

List is rather small compared to some:
30-30--More Deer Than I Can Remember
30-06--Two Deer
7.62x54r---Three so far
7.5 x 55 Swiss---Just Started
7.62 x 39---NOTA Thing Except a Possum caught in the turkey houses
380 HP---It was all I had and the deer was caught in a fence and suffering...Only took one shot at 4-6ft

Here's my list. I took "used on deer" to mean something used to actually kill a deer with.

I've killed more blacktails with the .223 Remington than anything else. I've killed more mule deer with the .30-'06 than anything else. I've killed more blacktails than mule deer during my hunting career, so in terms of total numbers, I've killed more deer with the .223 than anything else. I started out with a .30-30, and killed around a half-dozen or so with it. I went through a .250 Savage phase, shooting both mule deer and blacktails with it. I had a brief fling with the .280 Remington and took a couple of deer in Utah and Colorado with it. I've also killed a couple of blacktails with the .357 Magnum and a couple of mulies with the 7-30 Waters fired out of a Contender.

I've hunted with other calibers and taken game with them, but not more than one deer, so I didn't bother listing them.

.222, 223, 243, 6mm, 257 robt, 6.5 swed, 7mm mauser, 270, 7.62x39, 30-30, 308, 30-06, 8mm mauser, 375 H&H, 357mag, 35 rem, 44 mag, 50 & 54 muzzleloader; there are others I am sure just don't remember.

;)222, How did you find the .222 and .223 on deer?

? We all hear that they are unreliable, I have shot light big game with both, and only had one near failure. They really preformed better than the 243 class of rifle.

For me a very short list. 25-35, 270 and 30-06. 25-35 open sights when I was 11, 1 shot and 1 miss. Went hunting again 42 years later when I was 53. Now I use either the 270 or 30-06, both have scopes.

Wackmaster, did you kill deer with all of these or merely hunt with them??? I should have made that clear in my post. I find it interesting to hear people say this is the best deer rifle or elk rifle and then find they may have only killed deer or elk with a couple calibers. I am certain my list is not as long as yours, especially when one gets beyond 30 cal. Pretty impressive.

Every time I buy a new big bore handgun or center fire rifle, I want to justify having it by killing a deer, and I have a lot of guns...So, I will make it easier and just say most kills have been with the .358 win, 35 Whelen, .44 mag, 7mm/08. And I almost forgot - a .54 cal Lyman black powder rifle - shot a lot of deer with it when I lived in CT, and during NY's early Northern Zone blackpowder season.

first few deer 30-06, speer 165's in front of fifty sumpin grains IMR 4350, Ruger 77 Mk II
next up .45/70, rem 405's in front of H 4895, marlin guide gun. this gun killed a few deer with its factory sights before getting a scope
then .308, Sierra 180 and Hornady 180 SST, H 4895 (Savage 99)
.444 Marlin, H 4198 and 300 gr XTPs (Marlin 444P)
7mm-08, 120 gr NBT and H335 (biggest rack, heaviest body weight, longest shot

), Rem 700 MTN LSS, redfield 4x
oh yeah and some have dropped to the 30-30 as well, 170 speer FP, H 4895 or H 335

hogs:
.444, .44 mag (ruger carbine), 260 rem (700 MTN LSS)

I have used a 35 a 35sta. It was a fine rifle but bullet selection is limmeted. That being said that rifle will shoot through both shoulders of a bull elk at 350 yrds! I use one of two 338 today for the big stuff thay both are wild cats. one is my long range big game gitter 338/300 ultra in a 16 lb rifle. the outher is a 338 shortend .1875 to fit in a ruger m77. the shorty is a 340 wby match. So I can have a 340 in a controled feed ruger ss rifle with a 25" bbl.
I can see nothing wrong with the 35 but thay just arn't my gig!

I will never use a .222 or .223 on deer again unless is last ditch option! I filled some tags with both but stopped with this story. My 2 bothers and I had several doe tags that need to be filled. We were moving cattle and had ute rifles in the pickups a couple of doe step out creek bottem on the way to a winter wheat field. One was hurt so we decided to finish her off and fill a couple of tags (deer was going to a family who needed it) My brothers decided they would each shoot a doe (they had scoped rifles one .222 other .223 mine was iron sighted Mini 14 .223) I was going to help if either doe didn't drop. They both fired on count of three, both does took off running we each shot several time wombed doe dropped first and then the other both were hit 5 or 6 time each, 3 bullets stopped on ribs and 2 were stopped by shoulder blade on one doe the other was full of gang-green never dressed her out. Only on bullet did it's job on either deer we all stated never again .22 agian. I personally haven't used any thing smaller that .257 robts though my daughter and one son uses .243 with 100gr.

It is amazing here how many have used a 22lr on deer. At least we are all honest.

Oh yes and I had forgot, my only handgun deer kill was with a 22 magnum.
