Do you have a Tally?
How many Deer total?
What is the most popular calier?  (My guess would be 30-06 but with this crowd... Lots of Handi and levers)

mc, When I was a kid, I ask every hunter in our area questions like, how many rifles have you used on deer, what is your favorite rifle, if you were buying again what rifle would you buy, how many deer have you shot?????? I pestered eveyone who hunted and shot... Learned some things too. Most hunters would buy a gun different from what they had, and most did not KNOW how many deer they had shot..Only two guys out of maybe a 50 - 100 fellows I must have ask, knew their totals. One guy had shot 13 bucks. With things like the 30-40, 30-30, and 43 Egyptian (?) He was pretty old, I would say in his 70's, (to a kid that's old, ain't so old now). Another fellow said he had shot 28. He used a model 94 30-30.. In those days deer were not plentiful, and one had to travel quite a ways to find any huntable numbers.. My grandfather said he had shot a lot of deer, but he had no idea how many... He was the only one out of all the hunters that said he would buy a rifle like he had...It was a mod. 54 Win. 30-06.... My cousins went for the 284 model 99 in a big way when it hit the market. Most of them had been .300 Sav. shooters.. In that country, most guys said they wanted an all round caliber something to shoot woodchucks in the summer and deer in the fall. The old .30-06 was  the number one choice , with the .270 a close second. No one mentioned the .243, 250 Sav. or .257 Roberts. One farmer did use a Savage 340 in .222 for chucks and deer. One other question I remember asking was if they used a scope and what kind and power. Most did not use scopes. I had a couple cousins that had the old Balvar 2.5-8 on model 99's and a 30-06 pump. They encourged me to get a scope, then I fell in with a gunsmith a few miles from home. He was a super shot, Camp Perry shooter, stockmaker, excellent hunter, and into long range shooting.  The rest is history...Lots of money down the tube for guns, bullets, powder, primers, scopes, what have you..It has been fun and won't change a thing except if I were able to go back to high school I would skip everyday of deer season and hunt. They never failed my buddies who did. I did keep pretty good records of most of the game I have taken....

Skip school? What kind of an example is that? LOL!
My Dad let me take a week out of school in November, "as long as I had straight A's on my report card". All was great until I hit the 6th grade. I had a terrible year and got a B in penmanship. Dad was true to his word and allowed he was going to camp without me. By Thursday, my mom figured I'd been punished enough and took me to camp. Dad was not happy!! They had a few words and I got to stay in camp. Gotta love my Mom!! The next year I was back on track and all A's again. Then my Sophomore year, Dad got transferred, I changed schools and friends and girlfriends, and everything went South again. However, Dad concurred that it had been a tough move and that if I didn't give him any grief, He'd come home Wednesday and take me to camp. Gotta love my Dad! Later in life, I dropped out of college three times due to hunting season. I was 45 when I finally got my Associates! That's doing it the hard way...

BTW - My mom and dad are now 82years old, and I do love them both dearly!

Skip school? You bet! When do we leave??

i have only used a 308, but in two different rifles. i have only shot 5 deer. 1 being a whitetail. i carried a 270 for the first 14 years hunting but never shot a deer with it. we used to not have many deer up here but they are getting pretty plentiful now. you can now add a 243 to the mix!!

While looking back at some old hunting photos a few years a go I wished I remembered  who some people were and where we were.
About 10 years ago I bought a blank book and started to keep a record of date, who, where, what was hunted and with what gun.
I is neat to look back at some hunts and read what I thought was important about the day.  Weather, and what others people shot.

 >:( It is sad more don't think of photos and journals..... My dad was not much of a hunter but snapped a couple photos of my first deer, a doe, I quickly realized the need for photos... Also I read a piece by Ted Trueblood on keeping journals of ones hunting and fishing. So I have photos and journals from the time I was about 15.....

My son got his first deer a spikehorn buck on 10/30/09 with a stevens 200 in 308 win with a bushnell 3X9X40. Got the best pictures I could in the failing light with my cell phone camera. Of all the weekends to forget my good camera.

As far as number of deer, I would hazard to think the horn hunters are more likely to remember than meat hunters. Not stirring the pot just my opinion.

FIRST DEER was shot with a Winchester 120 Ranger in 12GA, using buckshot.

After that... several with a Rem 870 in 12GA, all with 00 and 000 buckshot (these were drives using dogs).

three with a .270

a bunch with two diff CVA .50 muzzleloaders

and over the last four seasons, a bunch with a 30-30 Marlin - my current rifle. I'm keeping it!

AND in the 2007/2008 seasons... three deer, including my largest ever, with a Mosin-Nagant M44 (7.62x54mm)

AND ONE doe killed with a bow - an old 1990s PSE - during 2008 season. First time bowhunting!
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

20 gauge slug,30-30,7mm weatherby mag.
My first two deer were taken with a slug from,
a pistol grip sawed off 20 gauge J C higgins sears & roebuck shotgun with no sights at all! :o :o :o
Yeah, It was fun! the first was a 20yrd broadside throat shot & didnt hit the neck at all just the throat...
dropped in its tracks! ;D

The second came bursting through the brush 15 ft in front of me on a fire break, ran 200 yards out of sight, came running back & stood 10 ft in front of me on the other side of the bush I was sitting next to. BAM!!!
shot right through the bush, Flipped completely over & died right there...
WARNING!!!
Theres not much usable meat when you blow out both shoulders at 10 ft with a 20 gauge slug! ::)
no exit wound surprisingly!

20 ga., 12 ga., 250Sav.(the best), 30.06,and 308 (presant), only the 06 was over 100 yrds. all the rest between 20 and 80 yards.

The 250 Sav, always one shot and drop instantly. 100 grn. rem soft pt core loks, deadly! easy to shoot well.

:) If you can remember all the calibers or guages, what have you used?  The thread on what, where, etc. made me think of this question. What do you have to say????

mines easy(I'm just a dud ;D,) .30-30 has taken every deer I've ever killed with exception to a bow. I've never taken a deer with a black powder rifle or shotgun, allthough I do hunt with BP every year. Never used a shotgun to hunt deer--never had to. I do own other calibers, but when season opens I always find myself reaching for the ole .30-30. I just love that old rifle, and it is very accurate, just a hair bigger than cloverleaf groups at 100 with just about any off the shelf ammo.

Its okay to be a dud. But your rifle still goes bang! The deer meat is in the freezer. That's all that counts.

Let's see????? I can remember what I killed my first deer with 34 years ago. A Marlin 336 30-30 Win with a Rem 150 CLHP bullet. I can remember what I killed my last deer with this past Nov. My custom Rem. 700 with a Shilen #6 SS 26" barrel with a 117 Sierra pro hunter pushed by 49 grs IMR 4350. I have killed hundreds of deer with everything from a bow & arrow, 22LR through a 45-70. Here are some of the calibers I can think of.
Rifle: 22LR, 243 win, 25-06, 260 rem, 6.5X55 Swede, 264 WM, 270 win, 7mm RM, 7mm STW, 30-30, 30X47 HBR, 308 win, 30-06, 8X57JS, 45-70, 45 & 50 cal. muzzle loader.

Handgun: 6mm-225 win, 32 ACP, 380 ACP, 357 mag, 44 mag, 45 ACP, 45 Colt.

Shotgun: 20, 16 & 12 with buck shot & slugs.
