38 SUPER
« on: August 19, 2009, 04:28:24 AM »
Just wondering how many carry or like the 38 super as a self defense round ? This round has been around for a long time and is apparently well liked by comp shooters but why not self defense ? You see very few if any at the gun shops around here

I like the .38 super.
Latest purchase was a LW Colt Commander that I had enhanced.
I have a 9x23 that is as much a .357 in  a 1911.
A .357sig on a Sig 239 frame.

The 38 Super is a excellent personal defense round.  Owned and carried a few.  Most often seen in full sized 1911 sized pistols unless you get as lucky as William Layton has with his lightweight Commander.  Some manufacturers have gone to the 357 Sig as it can be had on the smaller 9mm platform.  Not usually seen in the lighter weight packages like the Commander which is probably one of the reasons it is not seen as frequently in a defensive carry piece.  jmtcw.

Yeah,, Gotta admit the light little wonder nines are easier to pack. Wish I had never traded the one I had but that was before we could get a CCW permit. Hind sight  ::)
Wish I still had a lot of things I traded off years ago.
I'll tell ya , 30 years ago I had no reason to carry everywhere I went around where I live. If I was going to a place where I thought I needed a gun then the only thing going on there was trouble already and I didn't need to be there. But now days you can't walk into a McDonalds or even the local mall without wondering if someone there is going to go postal. I'm not the paranoid type but you know there are plenty more crazy's out there just ticking away and we have no way of knowing when and where they will go off :o

IF, you knew or could see around the corner---but, you can't.
I LOVE the .45---I sure do like the 9mm, .38 super and 9x23.
The 9x23 is really the answer too many of the compromises we have too make in a carry piece, especially in a semi-auto pattern piece.
The .38 super is not far behind and really, your not giving up much.
Shucks---buy one of each, I do, and then you always got someone to dance with----and----variety is the spice of life.

Hey Will,

You've got me interested......

Will you kindly give me some suggestions as to which 38supers I could look at and are available, or, should I just hold out for a Colt????

It will soon turn too lust-----trust me!
DRD
I am fond of Colts and STI because of construction on the STI, and cost.
Kimber, Kahr, Springfield are good.
I generally, except for Sig, have some things done too mine, well, too make them mine. Not really necessary unless you are anal.
Shoot em up and see if they work for you.
Take a look at the STI line---I reccommend Dawson Percision and those boys know STI's as does Vandenberg.
I gave up, a long time ago, saying i would only buy such and such.
There is an outfit up in kentucky--Bud's Gunshops---that I got my latest, the LW COLT COMMANDER thru and it was a pretty good deal.
I like Colts.
