Goose season

Today is open season day on greyag and pinkfooted goose in Iceland.  Due to my total failure to get leave from work I aint going until nest night.  Hope I have a story for you then.

Best of luck to you.  Our first season on Candian geese opens Sep't 1st.  If it is 70 or below I'll hunt them if above try for doves.

If you do post some pictures.  I have never seen these kind of geese and would like to see them.  Good luck.

H666, hope you do well and have fun on your hunt. Pictures of it is a good idea. My goose season opens Sept. 1 here. Maybe we all could post some pics of our opening hunts.   :)

It's off to a slow start, we took three down in two days, but there's at least forty five days of hunting left, it'll be good.  We forgot to take pictures but that is something we willl remedy.

The season opener up here (southern Ontario, Canada) is this Thursday, Canada goose only, duck opens later on. I have a new layout blind to try out, can't wait.

Slow start in Iceland.  Couple of geese and four ducks, but wer'e off again this weekend and with any luck it'll pick up.

I start tomorrow, with rain expected all weekend.   That means I will leave the 10 gauge at home.   :'(

When I go with my 12 it is 3 inches.

In Iceland we mostly use pellets size 2-4 with 42.gr. 2 3/4, although more and more hunters use 3 inch shells.

It strikes me as odd and has always done, that 10 ga. are banned in Iceland, except as collectors items.

Why would it be banned?  How big are your geese?  A 2 3/4" works fine for smaller geese, especially with lead or hevi-shot.  It does not work well for Canadas over 10 pounds.

We shoot greylag, which is smaller than canadagoose (I think), and a Pink-footed goose, which is smaller than the greylag.  I tend to use nr 2 or 4 pelletsin 42 gr. or 3 inch shots but some are using 36 gr. loads and wait for a closer range.

I've never known in reality why the 10 ga. was banned, but I think it has something to do with hunters using tens on seals and small whales some hundred years ago.  As I said I don't really know, and no lawyer or official has ever been able to tell me actually why.  Rifles weren't common here until after WWII  so that might be the case.
