No More Man vs Wild
« on: August 20, 2009, 09:45:04 AM »
I have for some time now been tired of the antics of Bear Ghrylls on Man vs Wild but last night was the final nail in the coffin. I watched it because it was filmed in Alabama. It was in the mountains in the northern part of the state and the weather was cold as there were icecicles hanging on limbs by the river he was next to. After talking about how cold is was he promptly jumped in the river to retrieve a tarp raft he had built. He then snared and killed a small hog and had plenty of food but the next day went into a small cave looking for food and fresh water. There was a hole in the cave that Bear had to wiggle in backwards and fell down into an opening. Said he couldn't go back up that way and would have to find another way out. I changed the channel right then as this sort of thing could get someone killed if they did the things he did. There was nothing helpful on the show just Bear acting big and bad for the camera.

+1 I have never been able to stomach that guy. At least that Les Stroud(Survivorman) Guy goes it on his own without a camera crew in tow as hokey as his show is.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

He stages his entire show...he is an actor who knows a few things about survival. Yet what he portrays on television will likely get regular folks killed if they were to use his footage as an educational tool. He is bad for hunters, fishermen, and outdoors men in general. If you want to watch great survival skills.

Watch Ray Mears on VEOH.com

Best damn survivalist television personality out there. No BS and sometimes has a nice story around the episode.

Thirty some full episodes that are very good.

Ditto:  I thought you were going to say the show was off the air as well.  It should be.

I was watching a show on the Discovery Channel I believe.  A bunch of people dropped off in Alaska with minimal equipment.  They ended up eating ground squirrels and voles, due to their inability to set up snares and successfully hunt.  They were being harrassed by a bear, and they had a gun.  Instead of shooting it for food, they kept running it off.  My son kept saying, "They all need to be removed from the gene pool".  I had to agree.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I agree that Les Stroud's show, Survivorman, was a bit corny at times but he never did the crap that Bear does that would get people killed in the outdoors.

Tried to watch the Alaska episode but it cut off about 10 minutes into it. I'll try more later.

You have to sign up for the veoh player, but I found it worth it and they don't spam you for anything ever. Not one email from them. I watch DU stuff and other hunting, boating, fishing episodes.

Hi Foxxtrot
I watched several of Ray Mears clips at that URL.
He seems to be very knowledgeable. I enjoyed watching them.
He also seems to know his botany. The importance of knowing a lot about useful plants is paramont. He also has Indian bow method down pat. The big trick being to cut a large enough notch in the base board.
Many people dont cut the notch large enough and have trouble.
That trigger he uses for his deadfall I've never seen that before.
I use the piute trigger. He is the most practical I have seen.

Ray does a really nice job and isn't in your face with the high antics of action/stupidity.

Maybe Ghrylls  could do a show up in Alaska. He could show everyone how easy it is survive by  finding fresh kills made by brown bears and taking them for the meat. After all didn't Tim Treadwell show us all how friendly and misunderstood they are.I'm sure they would love to share with him.
