New Tamer 20 - Only took me 3 hours to buy it!
« on: August 20, 2009, 03:14:55 PM »
2 and a half weeks ago I ordered a "snaketamer 20" as walmart calls it for some reason.  I went through a heck of a process to get the thing on order in the first place.  Took exactly 1 hour and 6 managers to figure out how to order the thing through the jewelry counter.  I ending up putting down more money then I wanted to because they hit a wrong button but they got it in the computer and that's all I cared about.  The guy told me it's be a week or two to get it in and they would call me.  Well today I was starting to wonder where it was so I stopped buy and the guy told me it's been there for a week!  I never got a call.  Anyway so I fill out the background check and he calls it in.  Maybe 60 seconds later he hangs up and says he got it!  Quickest background check I've ever seen.  So after this he attempts to ring it up but he couldn't figure it out.  10 minutes later he calls a manager who tries and then calls another manager and so on until we had 8 people trying to figure it out.  After awhile they decide to call another nearby walmart who connects us manager to manager trying to see if anybody knows how to do it.  At about 1hour 15minutes in I have the idea that they could cancel my layaway, refund my money, and then just let me buy the gun like normal.  So they have to call around and make sure if that's ok and finally we go to the jewelry counter to cancel it.  It takes them 10 minutes to figure out how to cancel my layaway.  Finally I get my money and we go back to sporting goods where he rings up my gun like normal.  Works out fine.  So we get to the point where I pay the 153.20 and I remember that I have a $20 gift card in my wallet.  So I hand it to the guy and he swipes it.  He tells me it's all good so I go to swipe my credit card and I see the screen says $173.20!   I don't know how in the word it managed it but it added $20 instead of subtracting.  So we go back through the managers while they try to figure out what happened.  Finally they cancel the whole thing and ring it up again.  Finally it works, gift card works, my credit card works, and I get out the door.  I walked up to the counter at 5:30 and didn't get out till 7:43.  That is ridiculous.  The only part that I can understand taking time (background check) was the shortest part of whole deal!  When you add both visits together I spent almost 3 hours and 15 minutes waiting for that gun.   I don't think I'll be special ordering from them again anytime soon!

BTW - It's a Tamer 20 Mod choke  -  prefix cac and stamped illion, NY

They list on theyre site that the tamers are full chokes but mines a mod.  I'm happier with mod anyway!
I'll get a report on here as soon as I get a chance to shoot it!

The same exact thing you are describing is the same ordeal I went though couple years back when I ordered a 243 Superlight. I mean the same thing to the T. I went in around 3:30pm that evening and finally got back in my truck just a few minutes shy of 7:00pm. I have not ordered a gun since from Wal-Mart and I am pretty sure I will not unless I am going to save a bundle of money and I have a whole evening to waste.

A couple of yrs ago I was in Gander Mnt and found a Tamer 20 in mod...I had considered the NEF and VC in 410 but when I saw the Tamer 20 in mod I bought it.  After I got it I called NEF and they told me they didn't make it with a mod barrel, only full...go figure, but I have seen several there since.  I like the mod over the full choke as that makes it better for slugs and those 410's are pricey.  It's become my main hang around shotgun.  It's easy to take along while I'm out mowing / working around my camp.  When it's in the garage I stash it with #4's, when in the field # 8's.  It's a great little carry gun but be forewarned, because it's so light it does has a nasty kick for a 20g.

I sympathize with your story yet at the same time enjoyed the humor of it all.  Dang is somedays life isn't just like that for us all!   A 20g Tamer in modified choke, now that's one to have on the list!  I only see that full choke listed so have avoided buying one. If I saw one on the rack with a mod choke I might go for it right then an there.

mjh, so far all of the ilion tamers I have seen are mod.  I've only seen 2 though so that doesn't mean much, but if I see a few more reports of them, it may be safe to assume that ilion is making them in mod only.  I'm going to get to shoot it here in a few hours.  While I don't plan to use it with slugs much, I have a box to try.  I'll let you know how it shoots them.  I'll also post on the recoil.  I have one box of 3" buckshot I bought just to test the recoil.

Tim, since you have connections maybe you could check my theory on the mod choke for me?

I think I am going to like this gun.  It seems like it's gonna fit the role I bought if for perfectly.  I wanted something lighte and handy to carry while squirrel hunting, and I wanted it to double as a farm gun.  I figure I can keep it stashed in the building with couple different shells so that it'll be ready for anything.  Snake, coyote, intruder...whatever.

I just bought a Tamer 20 at Academy about a month ago. About the same price as Walmart...$153.00 +/-.
Mod choke.

I know this is the shotgun forum, but wanted to put my 2 cents in on walmart. The nearest walmart that i can order a gun from is an hour drive. I found myself there about amonth ago and decided to price out a 30-30. The guy told me $242.00. I told him I would like to check my local dealer ( who I could walk to if I wanted to). The guy at walmart said thats fine if you decide you want to order it come on back and we can make it happen it usually takes 7-10 days. Well i went to the local gun shop and asked him to look for one for me. he called me back the next day to tell me wasn't able to find one for me. I asked him to keep me on a watch list, and he said he would. 1 week later he called me and told me he had found 2 and ordered 1 for me and that it would be in in 3 days. I then asked him how much, now here is the suprise $245.00. Only 3 dollars more than walmart a 2 minute drive and a lot less hassle. This is where I tie it into the shotgun forum. I just ordered USH 20ga from him for $249.00
308 win                 45-70                       12ga
30-30                    223 stainless steel   20ga TDC
44 mag                  Tracker II 20ga        20ga
45-70 Manlicher     20ga USH                28ga
