how about a buttout
« on: August 21, 2009, 06:22:28 AM »
Has anyone used one of these? For those that have not seen one, it
is a gadget will revolutionize your gutting work it has a T handle and the
end is stuck in the animals anus and has barbs on it then you can pull
the anus out and cut around the tool. WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT?
I usually do this job from the inside and don't spill anything in the process.
guess it is not a bad idea, i just don't need one. ;D

I clean my deer at a shed, on concrete, with a winch and running water, all adjacent to a walk-in cooler.  Start to finish might take 15 minutes.  One of my first cuts is at the rectum.  Never had a problem or seen a need to worry.  If anything spills, it washes out or just rolls out.  Stomach contents are the most difficult to remove even with a garden hose.

If you must drop your guts in the field, learn to take a neck shot.  Your deer will be much cleaner.  Tie the rectum if you wish. The rectum excision is most easily performed with a pointed thin blade.  I suppose waxed dental floss would work as a tie.

We started using them last year and my brother will probably never live it down. They work quite well if you put them in the right hole...he used one on a doe and was talking too much and not paying attention, he had a tough time getting it out. He's 57 so it wasn't a dumb kid thing and my nephew and I made sure he wouldn't forget.
Fast forward a couple days and we had 3 deer down field dressing them. My nephew had already dressed his deer but it was laying with the rest of them for photos, my brother proceeds to try to use the Butt Out on the small buck that was already dressed. He tried to brush it off, but we caught him in the act, I'm surprised no one cut themselves we were laughing so hard. He had been the one pushing to try them out all year so he became referred to as the Butt Out King.

They seem like another thing that was invented for which there was no need.  Folks have been cleaning animals for 1000s of years without them.

Interesting invention and do they work? Yes.

I'd say there's a market for them because I've watched some people who hunt once a year "butcher" a deer before the hide is off, crude to say the least, and they wonder why the meat tastes bad? When we party hunted my brother, nephew and/or I ended up taking care of all the deer...part of the reason we don't party hunt anymore. There are a lot of people out there like that.

Necessary, nope mainly a gimmick

After a couple moments with the Butt-Out, they'd be begging for some good old fashioned water boarding. ;D

You guys ain't right...

I won't need one...I either bone out the hams when cleaning or disconnect the hams at the ball joint with a knife...No need to take the butt out or saw through the pelvis for either operation...

Heck, I don't usually gut the deer before cleaning...

In case you are wondering, yes I remove the inner tenderloins...A 6 inch incision at the short ribs, run the knife between the tenderloin and backbone, cut both ends and slip it out with my fingers...

Chiming in from Baghdad...

You guys are brutal...I love it!

Back on topic now: I used one for the first time last year and I will probably continiue to do so. My wife shot a doe opening day and it was her first deer. So, let the lessons (and frustration) begin. I figured I would use the Butt Out as a deterrent so she would be disgusted and I would have my hunting time all to myself. The darned thing worked pretty good...too good in fact. I stuck it in, twisted, pulled, tied of the intestine, cut and started to field dress. Low and behold the last thing to hit the ground when the guts fell out, was the intestine and my string...no need to split the pelvis. From the time I inserted the Butt Out, until I was washing off the inside, was just over 7 minutes! I am no master by any means but it did make for a faster and easier dressing of the deer.

Here I thought that if I made it gross for my wife, she'd have nothing to do with it. It backfired...I made it look easier than it already is. To top it off, I am pretty happy with the time it saves.

Cheers!

AC

this tool is nothing more than a short Bull Cinch !
the bull cinch is a 4 foot piece of 1/2 inch rod with a 6 inch ring welded on one end and a point made of 2 pcs of same size rod welded at 45 degrees to the main rod in the shape of an arrowhead or point .
Stick it up a bulls back side and hang the ring over a post and it is a cinch he will be there when you come back for him .

You know what by the time we get all the BS products we won't be able to carry the junk . blood light , range finder , 10 ways to light a fire , first aid for you and dog , water , food bars , etc. etc.
the older i get the less i need , good rifle , sharp knife , 5-6 extra rounds , bottle of water and a couple saug bst., lic, nuff to carry .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
