T/C QLA effect accuracy?
« on: August 21, 2009, 12:16:41 PM »
Question for all you veteran muzzleloaders. Does the T/C QLA effect accuracy when shooting non sabot rounds?   If so, why?
Thank you in advance for the help.

Yes in some rifles. Some say the QLA is machined off center. I have another theory. I propose that due to the removal of most of the lands there is a possibility that gas can excape past the bullet as it passes through the QLA and the resulting side pressure on the bullet as it escapes the muzzle can cause it to become unstable. The Sabot stops this loss of gas around the bullet until the bullet is clear of the barrel and during this time the sabot is still in the QLA. That would explain why some shoot a sabot load fine but not solid conicals. If the QLA was machined off center it seems logical that the sabot load would also be affected and be inaccurate. Most of the rifles that will not shoot conicals shoot sabots just fine.

The most complaints ive been with full bore conicals and QLA is the TC brand. Not all of them are like this, but ive been more bad than good.

Heres my CVA Accura with a full bore Thor conical (Copper bullet) @ 100 yards. CVA also used a qla ( they call it a bullet guiding muzzle) Its only 3/8" long VS tc's 5/8" -1" i forget how long that sucker is.

First 3 shots are in the upper right hand corner with a 4 minute cool down between shots.

I had to send my Encore barrel back to TC because the accuracy sucked. They told me that there was a burr where the QLA met the rifling. When they sent it back it shot better, but not up to par, so I got rid of the barrel.

So hears my thought with this. I'm wondering if I take the barrel in and have the QLA drilled out like a pseudo magna port/ muzzle break type deal, if that would allow enough of the gases to escape that it would not effect the bullet????? What do you all think?

Or just order a bergara barrel for it, mount it onto the frame and see how that does. If you're happy, sell the tc barrel and get most of your $$ back that you spent on the bergara barrel.

Not sure if it hurts or not since I have never shot one and then cut it off to check for an improvement.  Don't see how the two I had could shoot much better though.  I like the QLA concept and wish my Savage had it.

And if your chevy is runnin' a bit rough, just pull the engine and put in a honda!
