What do you carry as a caliber?
« on: August 21, 2009, 01:01:22 PM »
Just currious as to what everyone that has a CCW actually has on them.
The gun mags all show you should have a full size 1911 in 45 acp.
Just wonder what everyone really carries?

4 inch 357 mag Security Six full of 125 grain jacketed hollow points. Very high on the list of bad guy stoppers. No need for a double tap with this round.

MC, usually pickup my Smith model 60 with a 3" barrel. It is 357, but I load it with factory Rem. 38 +p 125 hollow points.  I carry it daily on my morning walk about 80 percent of the time, sometimes I pick up one of my 1911's, in cold weather I can carry my mt. gun loaded with either 44 spl. or 44 mag. I live in a very small town so local crime is not a serious concern. ;D But I often walk before daylight, and I am concerned about stray dogs, or a stray mt. lion. They have seen several in town. :o Also we live with in 20 miles of I80 a major drug route across America. So the chance of meeting a thug is real. I think we see more criminals in our daily lives than we realize. One of my student' father works in the state Pen. in Rawlins. He says everytime he goes to Casper, he sees anywhere from 2 to 6 felons out on parole every trip. Some times they tail him around town. :o This sure opened my eyes about the world we live in. While I carry the model 60 here,  when I travel in the state, I pack it, at least one .44 and one or two 1911's. I have them stuck around through the truck so I can reach one with either hand.  Across country, I usually, add a Rem. 870 12 ga. Special field. Some states require handguns to be locked away, while long guns can be accessible.  ;)

I carry a Commander sized 1911 .45 under a tee shirt and in the winter when I can hide it better and am feeling in the mood to carry some real firepower, it's a full size double stack (16 +1) 1911 in 10mm.  There wasn't a choice for 10mm and it would only let me check one block anyway so I voted what I carry most often, 45 ACP.

40S&W about %90 of the time. Other choice is 9mm and don't feel under gunned when it's stoked with +P Gold Dots. I really think that modern bullets are able to negate some of the 45 cal magic. In my area I really never ran out of the 40 S&W, 45ACP and 9mm are still a little iffy, and you better be willing to both pay through the nose and drive around.

Your poll doesn't allow me to vote my response really. It varies based on situation really might be a little .32acp Kel-Tec P32 or a S&W 638 .38 Special or a .40 S&W Glock 27 or 22. It just all depends on the situation at hand. Heck I might even have a S&W .357 magnum at times.

Ya won't ever see me carrying a .45 acp or a 1911 anything as I don't own and will not own either.

I carry a Glock 21 in 45 acp. It has been my favorite handgun ever since I bought it and shot it!

Depends on the mood, weather, destination.
The easy answer is:
.380 Walther
.38 S&W
.38 super in an STI
.38 super in a Colt Commander
9x23 in a STI
.357 sig in a Sig 239
.40 in a Sig 239
several .45's in Colt and STI
Usually there are two or three in the console.
Sometimes only two.
I have not gone out today so I must wait to see.

All depends on the weather and where I am going or what I am going to be doing. Some people will carry the same cal in a couple different guns and then some like me will have various weapons to choose from in different calibers and power levels.. If I am just going to run up to wally world or home depot where there is not much of a threat then the little 32 is just fine. If I have to be in or going through a rough neighborhood where there is a greater known threat then I want something more than a peeshooter 32 with me.

since VT hasn't any gun laws I carry either Kel-tec PF9 or a Colt New Agent. I like both, but the PF9 is slim and works with shorts during the summer. I always carry in Burlington...just seems to be more scumbags inbound into this city every day. One thing I can never find is a crime report for Burlington...would love to see 2008.

But at least it is not NYC or DC. Can't even defend yourself in those dumps.

Of the 4 Sig models I have, 1 is a 9mm and the other 3 are .40s&w, by far my favorite caliber. The Sig250 I pick up in 2 weeks will be a .40 as well  ;)

Most of the time due to much travel, and in and out of vehicle I carry A LOT, a Model 60 Smith with 125 grain jacketed hollow points. It is a legendary one shot stopper in Law Enforcement and I had occasion to use the round once in a fight. It worked!
My second carry especially in the winter, is a Glock 21 in 45acp with either a 200 grain truncated flat point, or a 185 grain hollow point. This too is a stopper. I am not a big fan of the double tap, though I was required to teach it for many years. If your round is so weak that you need a double tap, then one needs to ramp up the round carried.
And yes, I used a 45acp in a fight on June 19th 1978, and while both opponents lived, and so did I. These two rounds have earned my respect first hand.

I have almost every Cal. shown on the list and at one time or another I carried one of those, however I have setteled on a 9mm the last 5 yrs or so, It just seems to fit right in there with the sig. 239 framework and I like it.   Jim

Thanks.
Sorry the poll does not let me go into too much detail about the caliber and i tried not to leave too many out.
Sorry I figured guys would mark the 40, 41, 44 special as a 10mm and then give me a blurb in the typed box.
Gratbeard, I am with you on the 1911.  While I respect them and have thought about buying one, I still look at the price and think, wow that's a Sig P220 with some gear and ammo.
As for the glocks,  they don't fit me.  I can not shoot them strait.  when a couple of my friends want me to loose a steel shoot they hand me their Glocks.

I might understand not liking a 1911 (I do), but what's wrong with the 45 acp. It's been working real good for a long, long, time.

Nothing wrong with the 45 ACP it and 44 special and 45 colt are all about the same in poop all three are great.  They just tend to be in BIG guns.  Although the Sig P245 was about the size of my P230 and I wish they still offered it.
There is nothing wrong with it.  I just read some of the gun rags and I do not think in the past three years there was not an issue that does not have either a version of the AR or a 1911 in them.  All of the 1911 articles say would make a great CCW gun.
And I wonder what you guys that carry on a regular basis actually carry.
When I was in VA I would carry a .380 in a fanny pack while riding my bike (peddle not motor-  Yep I'm a geek)

I have already stated, that for the most part, most of the time I carry my Smith Mod. 60. Top of the food chain on one shot stopping power, and very concealable, with comfort.

When I was in College I would teach new police officers how to shoot the new at the time M60 in 357 mag.
It first started out as me trying to be helpful and the two new cops were a little snotty and I bet them I could go rent one and beat them.
$50 each later I was giving lessons and they brought their buddies in for a class every wed when my work schedule was light.
Once they got used to the recoil all could have qualified with the back up gun easily with full power loads.
I used the same way I learned to shoot the full power loads out of my 44mag and they seem to work well at finding what you are doing wrong quickly.

I taught for 19 years, and always recommended practice with light loads. They just don't produce so many bad habits, and one can shoot more in comfort.
I also know that recoil and muzzle blast will not be noticed under stress. This, I learned first hand on two occasions. You will do what you train to do, if you have the sand to stand and fight.

I live in Mississippi, and carry a Ruger LCP in the summer, in a pair of cargo shorts. In the winter I carry a XD Compact in a IWB holster, with the LCP in a left hand jacket pocket. I have also been known to carry a model 38 S&W Bodyguard. (I checked 45 because I could only choose one) I occasionally carry my govt. model, but to tell you the truth I like the pull, point, shoot aspect of the XD. (Nothing to manipulate under stress, except the trigger)
